My '70S 2.2 with webers was running like there was no tomorrow. Sputtered one day and my local wrench (Black Forest) tol me to check the idel jets.
I took them out, cleaned them and it ran like it's old self again. However, I noted that 2 of the jets were of a different size, .045 inlieu of .050 as the other four. Smart me decides to buy all new ones at the .050 size. I get the 6 of them along with new rubber o-rings, install them and....it runs like crap now. Nothing else changed. I've even gone back and put in 6 other o-rings just in case. What the %$*&&@!) is going on????? Ken |

put in some fresh plugs and readjust the mixture screws. if you change idle jet size, the idle mixture changes as well. use a plug that is hot enough to stay clean.

also, did you physicaly messure the idle jets? people have been known to drill out smaller jets to make complete sets. could be that your two 45's were drilled at one point out to 50. just a thought.

Hey Johnny Walker...
Yes, did a complete tune up with new plugs (NGK), wires, dizzy cap, innards, etc. just before I changed the jets. Original two .045 jets looked like they might have been taken out to .050's but couldn't confirm. Regardless, going to all new .050's all around I thought should have just made sense. Why the sudden change? Am I getting air around the new o-rings????? I've double the o-rings and it really runs bad, must be the jet's nozzel is pulled out that hair too far. Even without a double o-ring, the thing seems to be running very rich now as there is a smell of gas and it's smoking. Even rechecked the dwell which is dead on 38 degrees. I've set tomorrow afternoon aside to tweak this thing again but I'm getting frustrated at this point. Ideas anyone???? |

Everytime I've heard of somebody doubling up on "O" rings, it has caused problems. I haven't played around with those in Webers, but stacking up "O" rings doesn't usually make sense. Maybe it does in this case. Try a search to see if you can find out anything. Otherwise, bump, bump, bump!

whenever this happens to me(l`ve got 12 vehicles,this stuff happens all the time)l put things back as they were before l "fixed" it.l`d lose the extra O rings also.

Have you tried putting the original jets back in? If you do and the engine runs as it did before, then there's something different about the new jets. Might give you a little more information to go on.

I've got the original .050's but trashed the .045's as they looked pretty corroded. Also, dumped the orginal o-rings.
Plans for tomorrrow called for putting the 4 original jets back in but this is kind of like Russian roulet with only 4 of the 6. I've looked at the new jets and they are idenical to the original in size, lenght, etc. I'm really at ends on this one. As nothing else changed except the jets and the o-rings. It just doesn't make any sense....but then I've come accept that about most things these days. |

Just what the wife said; take it to the mechanic. Can't give in to her, it's a guy thing I guess. I've got to figure this one out on my own....with lots of help from this BBS! It looks like it should be a simple fix but ????? I'm not sure it's just the mixture, why would it be if it's only the jets were all replaced with new ones of the same size. Doesn't make sense. Ken |

everyone's advice was right....put the old parts back in and see what happens. The beast is running as good as it ever did again!!!!!!
I did a bit of dumpster diving to find the .045's I'd tossed. Found 'em!!!! Pulled the "new" .050's and did a comparison between old and new. Very interesting. Although I don't have a "guage" to know the exact size, I did use a sewing needle to see how much of it would stick out the small end of the nozzel. Surprise, on the old ones the needle stuck further out. Given the needle's tappered it tells me the jeting in the old ones are actually larger than the new .050's I bought (all $65 worth of them!!! ![]() Also on the older jets the other 2 holes further down the shaft of the jet ( I have no idea what to call these so for now I'll just identify them as the other 2 holes) are also larger than the new jets. I guess some wrench had enlarged the old jets beyond the .050 size. Trouble is the needle was sticking out further on some then others of the old jets so they are not all the same size. How do I go about finding out what size the "old" jets actually are? Is there a guage or something out there I can get my hands on to do that?? Once I do and find the size (of the biggest one I suspect) how do I reemout the new ones to fit the same size? Or do I just go for another $65 and buy new ones at a larger size? Input please!!!!!!
