tiptronic experience ?

Hi guys (and gals)
I sold my 1985 911 Targa last year and loved this forum, it was invaluable.

Now I realized the mistake I made and am looking to buy-up, probably into a 1995 Cab. A good majority of these models seem to have the tiptronic transmissions.

My question - is there anyone here who preferred a manual transmission BUT got the Tip, and was happy w/ their choice?
I'm afraid to that I may miss revving the car up when taking off, but the tiptronics seem to be more available and more affordable.

as always, thanks !

Just can not see a porsche with an Automatic. I would look for the standard... thats half the fun the search.... just my opinion.

When I looked at my 964 and realized that it was an "automatic", I said yuck!!!. But I remember the sportomatic from the 60's and 70's and knew guys that loved them. And loving to drives Porsches I thought what the heck I'll take it for a spin. Well 40 miles later, I purchased the car. It took about 5 minutes to figure how to use the tiptronics. Everything that can be done with a manual can be done with a tip except "pop" the clutch. I never drive with it in the automatic mode, ALWAYS in the manual mode. Heal and toe are a thing of the past, learning to brake with the left foot took a little getting used to. To down shift a blip of the gase peddle and the down shift is as smooth as glass.

Never have had to replace a clutch, or flywheel. Have talked with any number of tip owners and mechanics; none seem to report any problems. My car has 45K and serviced the tip at 36K. The only service was to change the fluid.

Maybe others can address the issue to repairs, but I've heard of none. My mechanic says its the best transmission that Porsche has ever put in a production car.

The utlimate question is: Would I buy another Porsche with a tip? And the answer is YES.

Before you purchase, or begin the purchase, pick up Adrian Streather book on the 964, and read about the tip. And also get a PPI done on any prospective purchase by an independent reputable shop. Good luck!!

That my opinion.

Drove my cousin's '99 Cab. tipper in FL last year. Loved it for stop and go driving and it was actually sort of fun out on the open road too. Tip Turbo is supposed to be the bomb as it keeps the turbos spooling. I could live with one.

Good luck,

Tom

I have an 03 GTI with the tiptronic and I love it. It allows you to drive the car like a manual when you want to and let it shift for you in close traffic. It gives you the one thing a normal automatic does not....control. I would say if you have to commute the car through traffic it would be a great way to go.

Love the Tip with thumb shifters in my Cayenne. Drive it in manual mode 90% of the time. But that's my daily driver and it's convenient to pop it into auto mode when necessary. Not sure I'd want it in a 911 ...... but I suppose if the 911 were a daily driver it would make sense. -- Curt

After 15 years of owning nothing but manual transmissions I am seriously considering a move up that will include a Tip....

I am new to owning a slushbox 964 and so far it seems to be pretty fun to drive in the manual mode. The 3.6 has so much torque that when you are driving around town in traffic in the automatic mode it really does not like to rev much. I tend to keep it in 3rd most of the time when in auto mode. I am curious as to how you can blip the throttle when down shifting in tip mode? I guess I will just have to try it. Overall it is a bit different experienca driving a 911 with the automatic. I am not dissapointed in my choice, as my wife can drive it anytime with ease. One big not I have learned since I got my 91. When in automatic it starts out in second. The 92's and later start out in first. I wish I knew this before I picked up mine. I might have held out for a later car.

Pete,

Have you looked into chipping your tippy with the 92 e-prom?
I think it's just a matter of updated software...anyone?

Seriously considering a 964 tiptronic in my future and this info would be very valuable.

Joe

I have heard it is not as easy as chipping the box or even swapping out the controler itself. I guess Porsche really change it fairly exstensivly. If I am wrong please let me know. I would really be interested in having my car start out in first other than me forcing it to.

"Cheapest fix for a Slow Tip .... leave the gear selector in 3rd !
Maybe you know this but ? Tips start in second gear when left in D but in 3 they always start in First. Much more responcive around town without flooring it, or use the tip always to engage First on start."

Can anyone confirm this?

Cheers,

Joe

My wife has a 968 with a tip. She has driven it about 90K now and the tip has always worked great.I've been thinking about updateing her to a C-2 cab and no dought it will have a tip. I enjoy driving her car and would concider a tip in my next porsche except I'll be keeping my 75 till I die . Randy

If it is going to be your wifes car, get the tip . While my wife doesn't balk when she drives mine, she prefers the auto because she is always preoccupied with to many other things...

Me, I would never buy a sports car without it being a manual!!! But thats me...

Drove my friends new passat with the tip and while it is better than an automatic (all autos should have the tip feature) it is definitely NOT a manual...

Be sure to look at the 0-60 times for a tip before you buy. They're a lot slower than manual. And for me, that would be a very bad proposition. There are times when you're going to want to gun it off the line, I think, and in a tip you'd be way behind my 3.2. Way behind.
