915 Overflow
Okay, I drained my tranny, pulled off the top plug, pulled off sthe side plug and poured in my gear lube until if flowed out the side hole. Put the side plug in, pointed the vent to the top, and thought I was done.
Now my tranny is covered in oil after I drive! 1) should I have put in less oil? 2) is some 'overflow' normal when you first drive after a re-fill? 3) are 915's as leaky as their magnesium engine mate? |

I did my 1982 911SC with your proceedure and had no leaks. It is hard to overfill using this proceedure.

Well actually the engine was out on the floor for rebuild. So, yes it was pretty well level.
I guess I have to assume this won't continue for too much longer, but I am worried that now I don't have enough oil in the case.

Mine did the same thing recently. I used Mobil 1 as the local Swepco dealer was out and I wanted to get it done. I thought it might be due to the synthetic oil. I went under last night and loosened the fill plug and a little oil came out, so I think I didn't have it completely level and had a little too much in. Hopefully its OK now. I may drain a qt and put in a qt of dino gear oil based on what I've read about synthetic in the 915.

I am going to level it and check the fill level today, whiles it's out of the car.

I don't know what you mean by pointing the vent at the top but the hole in the vent fitting should be within the 90 degree sector facing forward as in the direction one drives. This may be the source of your problem. Jim

Not sure what you mean by "pointing your top plug to the top" butif you're talking about the vent, the hole should be pointing to the front of the car.
There was a recent thread here that discussed that. You may want to double check the positioning of the vent hole. Randy

A tranny sitting on the floor is not at the same level as when it's installed. The front is higher int he car than on the bench/floor.

You either have leaky gasket somewhere or vent hole is pointing in wrong direction.
