good drives north of NY City?

It looks like the good weather will hold for the weekend so I want to take the 911 out for a good run. Can anyone direct me toward some good curvy roads with in a few hours of NYC?

Thanks!

James

I live 1 hr north of nyc. Go up the saw mill, to Taconic pkwy N, Rhinebeck NY is a real nice town to stop and check out. Its also close to the Hudson.
......Cold Spring is cool too. Antique stores... quaint resturants....etc.
Its also on the river off 9W. you would need to map it.
Ken
I would offer to cruise with, but my wheels are out at Al reeds polishing heaven.

Taconic is really nice, but there are alot of radar traps. Use a radar detector and alot of common sense.

Not sure if you want to go west of the city but if you take 80 W out across the Delaware Water Gap you can find some very interesting twisties there. Take the first exit to the information center. Go through the back of the parking lot, over RR tracks and onto the back road. Very cool ride. You'll end up near Fernwood Golf course and down the street from Bushkill Falls. Great place to get lost for a while.

High Point or Bear mountain may be cool rides too.

I live in Cornwall-on-Hudson, just north of West Point. The drive up the Palisades to the Bear Mountain Bridge, then onto Route 9W North to th area of Cornwall is fabulous--some great sweeping curves and bends, great views of the Hudson. Then Route 218, the Old Storm King Highway, is spectacular.

One Saturday, I'll be in Chicago for a book-signing at the BookExpo convention for my new book, "The Gold-Plated Porsche," but I'll be home Sunday. If you want to do the drive then and stop here--I can provide directions--we can sit over a roadmap and I can send you to some nice drives a bit farther north, around the Ashokan Reservoir.

But your basic tip will be to stay on the Nebraska side of the Hudson.

Stephan

Take 684 north which then turns into RT 22. Take that up to RT 112 (I believe) which goes to Lime Rock Park. I'm sure there is some activity up there this weekend. Lots of neat little roads up there. Oh, and lot's of police too. ;-)

I took Jim on the wildest 20mi twistie on LI.
Northern State between Wantagh Pky & Sagitoks Pky.. do it weekdays at 9pm. Robert Moses designed the rd for 45mph. The late night commuters are doing 80-90mph.

Last month's accident wreck wasn't found for 2 days.

James,
Steve knows what he's talking about. I went around the Ashokan resevoir yesterday and it was postcard perfect.
twisty and fairly empty but you have to keep in mind it is somewhat residential & might be kinda busy on a weekend. (Rt 28 A) 28 itself is kind of ho-hum. Off of it you will find 214 which is nice. Closer to the city, Palisade Parkway is smooth and 'fast'. I noticed Tripple A gave it a very low grade for not having a shoulder etc, but that will just thin out the mini-vans etc. (hopefully). Then there is Bear MT which has short but sweet roads just south of the bridge. Taconic is fun. Then overlooking the hudson: 9W is verging on the European with all those tiny menacing rock walls. There must be lots of places... but they are forcasting rain this weekend.... Steve Your Book Looks great congradulations! More on this later...

Ron's right about the wild LI run, but I'm talking twisty back roads way out on the eastern part of that island you guys live on. Totally unexpected.

LI has been a focal point since before the revolution.. and even thou it's still NYC metro, there is some serious history around. it's unexpected when you see LI money & politics in charge of development. The ride I mentioned with Jim is a long narrow twistie because it had to twist thru everyone's estate after WW2.
and it was designed for 45mph.

One more route for you to see. Rt 32 north, north of Newburgh heading to New Paltz. Pick up Rt 44/55 west to the (sorry for the spelling) Shawangung mountians, also known as the "gunks". Great drive lots of twisties, beautiful mountians and cliffs. Don't forget to look for the cliff climbers and skydivers. Take 44/55 over the mountian to rt 209 south to Ellenville. Then take Rt 52 east back over the mountian. A fabulous ride.

Great place to eat is the Mountain Brauhouse? on Rt 44/55 at the foot of the Gunks.....great German food. This is also close to New Paltz which is a neat village and The Mohonk Mountian House which could be a trip in its self. Wow we got some great place up here!

Have Fun
Ashton

PS Palisades Parkway North of the Thruway is a horrible road. Probably has not been paved in twenty years. YOU will feel every bump, and there are lots of them!
