Clutch, Tranny or both?
Need some expert opinions here if possible? Today when I went
through the gears I hit third, started to accelerate and the tach reved up. It felt like third gear was slipping a bit. Is this the clutch going or time for a tranny rebuild? Any idea's?

Gears do not slip (they are always in mesh - except for reverse) and the synchro hub (dog teeth) and operating sleeve are either engaged together or not; again they do not slip. You likely have a clutch problem; did the engine noise also increase with the tachometer rise? Jim

You might try adjusting the clutch but depending on the miles you may be simply due for a clutch job. How many miles does the clutch have on it? There is also the possibility that either the transmission input shaft oil seal or the engine rear main seal has failed allowing oil to reach the clutch friction surfaces. Any sign of oil coming from the clutch bell housing? Jim

Thanks Jim! Car has 70K miles and no oil leak. Does have a familiar "Clutch" smell when hot though!

I'd say clutch.
I once had my clutch flood with transmission oil when the case cracked (it was on a VW Golf) and it slipped - all the time. The car wouldn't even move under it's own power!

Probably time for a "clutch job" then. Jim

I'll second the clutch job. If the trans will not go into gear afterwards, I would proceed with a trans inspection.

Clutch
Be sure to replace the cable also. Great time to clean and detail the motor.

I just had the same thing start to happen, but I put in a new Sachs sport clutch just about 2,000 miles ago and had the flywheel resurfaced.
The strange thing is, it only happens some of the time (at WOT higher in the rev range in 2nd or 3rd). It seems to happen after an "imperfect" shift, but then usually is gone when I try to recreate it. Can a clutch alternate between holding and not holding like that, or is that just an earlier sign of failure? I have no oil leaks from the bellhousing, and I really hope I don't need a new clutch so soon! Has anyone evey had this and been able to adjust it to get it right again? Olivier
