Major rumble/rattle with load at low RPMs

When I turn into my driveway, I need to come to almost complete stop and turn up a hill into my driveway. If I leave the clutch out, I am asking the 3.2 to power up the driveway at about 1,200 rpms in 1st gear. I usually am usually greeted with significant rattling from the tranny/back end which goes away as the rpms rise above 1600. If I attempt the same turn in second, the rumble/rattle is much worse (due to lower prms and longer time to accelerate). I thought this might be the heat shield flapping under the cat or some other loose sheet metal. Nope. Now I think it is a tranny issue. Obviously asking the engine to push hard at such low rpms with the clutch out is not a good idea but the rumble/rattle seems unusual. I would expect engine lugging but not this.
Any thoughts?

More info: This happens on the '88 G50 and not the '86 915.

My 87 (no LSD) does this and so does my friend's 86 (LSD). But mine is MUCH louder. The 86 is barely perceptible. If I put my car in 5th @ around 1500rpm? Oh my is it loud. Doesn't go away 'til 2000.

I imagine it's differential or ring & pinion chatter. Geary or John Walker (just to name a few) would have a good idea what this condition is a result of.

I think this is typical of some of the G50 clutches. I get the same sound comming away from a stop sometimes or when trying to park. My wrench said not to worry about it.
I do believe the June issue of Excellance spoke at length about this on the 87-89 3.2's. Also said not to worry.

It's the springs in the clutch plate rattling - load and low rpm's do it in the G-50's

Ah yes. You are correct JD. I now remember recently reading that info. Thanks!

Back in 96 I nearly bought a really nice G-50 Carrera with less than 30k miles. But, on the test drive, the gear/clutch rattle was so bad I thought the tranny was coming apart. I couldn't believe a car could be sold with such a rattle.

In retrospect, I should have bought the car. It was really a fine car.
