915 Transmission woes
On my way home Friday evening, the tranmission in my 1983 911SC decided to stop using second gear. I gearshift had picked up a vibration under acceleration in second gear about 3K miles ago. I guess this was a sign something was not quite right.
Anyway, what is the best course of action, rebuild or buy used? Any idea on costs to rebuild or replace? There is supposedly someone on the East Coast (CT?) that rebuilds 915 transmisissions for a living. I am not really in a position to do it myself. Thanks. |

Definately rebuild it rather than buy another transmission. Gary Fairbanks in Conneticut is probably the guy you are thinking of. You didn't list your location in your profile but maybe some near you can walk you through it.

Likely time to stop driving it as I suspect your second gear synchro has failed. This can dump broken synchro hub pieces (dogteeth) and other loose bits into the transmission. If some of these hardened steel pieces go through the meshed gears the cost of repairs can increase significantly. Jim

I have stopped driving it until fixed. I am located in Maryland, so a trip up to Connecticut is not too bad. I am going to drain the transmission, see what falls out, and go from there.
You guys are an optimistic bunch, though. Once I see what falls out, I may give it a shot. |
