So... what's the trick to sealing the transmission?

Well, transmission is together, shifting beautifully.... out of the car at least. Engine is detailed and resealed where aplicable. I put the new clutch and resurfaced flywheel on and hung the tranny last night. Came in this afternoon after work to reinstall the engine and what do I find? A nice big BLUE puddle of oil under the suspended transmission!

It seems to be comming from the access panel gasket on the bottom. I cleaned this thing extensively, sprayed the gasket with copper gasket meterial, and torqued it properly. What is the trick to get this thing to stop leaking?????? I was planning on putting the engine back in tonight and driving it tomorrow, so much for that idea.

Did the same to mine. All new seals and gaskets. It dribbles from the new shifter seal. I pressed the seal in Squarely with a press.

It might be from the plate you describe too.

It leaks about one drop on each run. Since it's Swepco, I'm living with it until next February. I'll use Dreibond on the plate. I had installed it clean and dry before. I used Dreibond on the end cover. Great stuff.

Anyone know of a shifter rod seal that doesn't leak? It's not on account of the virgin bore being scratched since I took off the end cover to remove and reinstall the seal with a press. Viton?

The mother of all sealers for the 915 is a gray product from Mercedes Benz. Its called silicon case sealer. I have used it on 3 915s (on the 2 case seams and the shift shaft holder plate) without a drop of the blue stuff finding it's way out.

I can send you the part number if you get blank steres from the parts guy.

That would be great if you could send the part number.

How is that stuff different from normal high temp silicone gasket sealer?

Don't know except I forgot to mention that you use it WITHOUT the gasket. It is made to seal metal to metal. Hang on for the pt #.

"Silicon Sealing Compound"

A local 911 wrench told me about it, said he stopped using the paper years ago and never had one come back with a leak.

I just rub sealant into both sides of the paper gasket before assembly and I haven't had any leaks. That's only about a dozen rebuilds. I used Loctite 518 for the all but the last couple. Switched to Curil-T for the last ones but I don't know how those are holding up yet.

I'm going to give it one more try with the paper gasket and copper silicone gasket material. I cleaned it again last night with a wire brush to get all the old gasket material off, and resealed it. I just hope the leak is not comming from the case because I REALLY don't want to have to take the tranny apart again. If it is still leaking I'm going to try the Mercedes gasket material with no paper gasket. It's just so frustrating because I could have had everything back together by now. Now it will probably be the weekend before I'm done. Could be worse I guess.

Thanks for the suggestions, and any others are welcome.

One more thing: the local MB dealer doesn't stock this sealant, and they want $25.00 for it! Is there an alternative?

CD,

I just ran a bead of Loctite 874 around the mating surfaces along with the Copper Spray on the gaskets. Worked like a champ...no runs, no drips, no errors! You can prolly get the 874 from Pelican or from you local Porsche Dealership, but you WON'T find it at any of the chain stores.
