Are B&B and GHL the only choices for 930 performance exhaust ? I've been looking around and I can't seem to find any other choices.
thanks,
Dave

Fabspeed is another very good choice.

Blaine,
I looked at FabSpeed but all I saw was a muffler. I am going to need the whole system. Did I miss something ? I (will soon) have a 78 930,
Thanks,
Dave

No, you are correct. They offer a dual out combo that has the exhaust exit on the passenger side and the left side is a seperate wastegate exhaust outlet replacing the factory pipe.

Could you use the GHL headers and the fabspeed muffler given it bolts up to the turbo? Probably a stupid question.

My problem with the Fabspeed dual exhaust is the dummied up wastegate pipe. Also, I haven't heard of any dyno results on the Fabspeed. John Hunt did some dynos with a GHL dual outlet and seemed to have some power gain.

I have the GHL setup on my car...err...had. I sent it back last week to have the right tip properly aligned. When I was taking it off the car, I noticed that one of the welds on the muffler was cracked. So that'll get fixed at the same time.

The GHL headers are great. Their muffler is much better than stock. I put my stock muffler on for emissions about a year ago and the car was a dog even when boost finally hit. The sound of the GHL system is definitely loud (but good, IMO). I think there's some drone under 3000 rpm. It makes talking on the cell phone difficult. Otherwise, I've been very happy. I've had a few comments about how loud it is when on boost. Enthusiasts all think it sounds awesome.

Borla is an alternative, I have seen single and dual outlets on several 930's and they sound pretty good.
I have a GHL dual outlet, sounds great.

I had the GHL headers with the Fabspeed muffler worked fine now have the GHL muffler setup and like the sound much better I went with the duel out which is a true duel out not like the fabspeed which is only a single

Dave,
Although the B&B system may be a possible choice, I would not recommend this system as a true contender for gaining your business. My experience is that the quality and workmanship are not impressive or up to par which is why I removed the B&B system from my car. Resonance from the system was terrible and I found it incredibly too loud for my taste - there was however, a slight improvement in performance but just not worth the 'obnoxiousness' from the system. Since my personal experience is based solely on a 911SC sysyem I cannot say that you would encounter the same problems with your soon-to-be-aquired 930. I believe that there are several highly recommended systems that would prove to be a wise long term investment but I cannot say the same about the B&B.

Thanks for the replys guys. It looks like I'll be going with the GHL. Daryl, I have a '79 that I bought a B&B for and I had the same quality experience. It terms of performance, the US turbo exhaust was so restrictive that you really can pick up 30 or 35 HP by putting a performance exhaust on.

My experience is very different... I run the B&B exhaust and love it. I have no issues with the quality, the sound is perfect (for a weekend car), and the dual exhaust looks bad ass on the 930. Just my $0.02 so you get a both sides.

Just a quick clarification. The GHL does have two muffler outlets, but IMO they're not TRULY dual in the sense of a dual exhaust from a V8. The headers still join each bank of cylinders into 1 pipe right before the turbo, then the muffler splits it back to 2 outlets.

The Fabspeed uses the left outlet for the wastegate only.

Another option for mufflers that nobody mentions is from RUF. While it is expensive, it maintains the stock look much better than anything else. It also comes with the body panels to make the right side cutout look completely stock. You'll have to get those painted, of course...but its the ultimate stocker look IMO. And you usually can't go wrong with RUF parts.

GHL header & dual muffler.

Just watch out for the installation. The right outlet has been known to hang lower because way back upstream the turbo didn't mount at the exact right angle to the new header.

Real pain to fix but worth it in the end. And if your shop knows what they are doing, they can even get the car to pass emissions without changing you back to the old stock set up.

Mine has that problem and is currently at GHL to address it. I'm hoping that I can help them fix their jig at the same time that they fix my muffler.

john walker's workshop 06-09-2004 03:58 PM

they claim their jig is fine. they said my customer's engine must be twisted in the chassis. ya sure, the old dual outlet RUF unit fit fine. after all the complaints i've heard of the right tailpipe hanging 2" lower than the left, i kinda think it's a jig thing. the muffler would probably be fine on a stock exhaust system, but with their turbo header system, the turbo mounting flange is definitely on the wrong angle, which causes the right side to sit lower. my complaints fell on deaf ears.

arrivederci 06-09-2004 05:14 PM

Well, for those who complain, they'll probably continue to handle it on a case by case basis. The result is that some will use other mufflers because they don't want the hassle. Is the RUF muffler aligned properly when used with the GHL headers?

My guess is the GHL got too big -- selling more exhausts for other cars (vettes, audis, subarus, etc). The Porsche community is probably now a small percentage of their sales.

john walker's workshop 06-10-2004 09:06 AM

the RUF muffler fit the body properly when it was attached to the stock 930 exchangers, so that would rule out the engine being cockeyed in the body. after the GHL 930 exchangers were installed, the RUF muffler sat at an angle. so it was the exchanger system, not the muffler in this case. i had to drill the turbo and mount plate bolt holes oversize so the turbo could be twisted a bit to help raise the right side of the muffler, and pie-cut the RUF muffler close to the inlet flange, bend upward and reweld to complete the alignment. but "our jig is fine".

930 Guy 06-11-2004 06:56 AM

I have a quad outlet Borla that I wouldn't trade for anything. Sound is awesome. I only have euro stock exhausts, and looking forward to either Andial or Powerhaus headers which will both out perform any of the others listed. Brian
