Adjusting rear ride hight
Hallo;
I'd like to know how to adjust the rear ride hight. I've measured the back and front, and noticed that the left rear (driver's side) is 1,5 cm higher than the right!!! That is if measured from the floor (ground) to the lip. The front hight is the same on both sides. I'd like to lower the rear left side so that it is the same as the right rear, but have no idea how to do it. I have only Haynes, read it, but still do not know what to do. The car is a 1980 911 sc, and as far as I can tell pretty standerd, although I know nothing about suspensions, shocks etc. Thanks Marius '80 911 sc (Euro I believe) |

Perform an extensive search in the archives: this subject is HEAVILY talked about and the information you need is all in there. Not a job for the uninformed but can be done by the home mechanic using the proper tools (you can purchase them here from Pelican).

Get and read Waynes 101 Projects. Also, I think this is dicussed in the tech articles here on this site. I don't know if the '80 had the adjustable plates or not. If not, you will have to pull the torsion bar and re-index. This can be tricky as the splines differ in count from one end to the other. This provides a much smaller adjustment in increments mathematically. For instance, you can move the bar 5 notches on one end and back 4 on the other for a very fine adustment.
Search for "spring plate angle calculator" to see more on this. Or, better yet, here it is: http://vintagebus.com/cgi-bin/spring.cgi |

If you sit in the car and add your body weight to it, does the 1.5cm difference go away? If so, leave it alone.

Cars at least as early as '77 should have stock adj. spring plates -- but you might still have to reindex the T-bars -- if the setup is at the end of its adj. range.
ALso, yes, have a similar wt. friend sit in the drivers seat and check. Be sure to drive the car over some bumps to settle the susp. before any checks & after you change anything. It's not hard - good luck. |
