vacuum lines on 3.2L ????

In looking over the car and the motor after last nights engine/tranny drop, I'm trying to document a couple of things so that I'll know how to put it back together.

There is a vacuum line left in the car that WAS hooked to the throttle body on one end
The other end was not hooked to anything!

I also found a vacuum line left in the car untouched that MAY be related. It comes out of the passenger rear inner fender (from that big tank that is located in the front nook of the passenger rear inner fender ... is that the charcoal canister?) and is then spliced (definietly not factory appearing) to a line that runs across the front of the engine bay, down next to the drivers side shock tower and then up through the body next to the throttle rod.

That is the non-factory splice I'm reffering to.

How is all this (particularly the line that was hooked to the TB and loose on the other end) supposed to be hooked up?!

The open port on the back of the throttle body gets connected to an air valve that is atop the oil tank on the right side of the engine bay.

I originally thought that spliced line was supposed to be hooked to the throttle body location in that first picture you posted. Now I can't remember where it goes from the charcoal cannister. Sorry. Somebody else should be able to go look at his car (mine's at home in the garage) and tell us where it goes.

And that splice is apparently a factory job. My car has the same splice.

Thanks Kevin! I saw item number 31 in the car, but I missed the port for the small vacuum line. I'll have to go look for it. If that other splice is factory then I am in business.

I believe the vacuum line has been disconnected from number 31 for some time (meaning I was driving it that way). Does that mean I was running lean?

Hoses

Russ in VA,

I'm glad you asked this question! When I took my engine out I wasn't quite as thorough as you and I could not figure out that same line (the first one). So, thanks!!

The second one in question is the same in my car also! I didn't think it looked factory either!

I have a question: I have a bracket that I cannot figure out and it looks like #32 in the drawing. I'll attach a photo and maybe you have seen it also. If anyone knows, speak out!

Russ,

I don't know if you figured it out already (hopefully you did), but the splice hose you asked about does not connect to anything on the engine, nor in the engine bay. The hose goes out of the engine bay at the left front.

Then ends up inside the front trunk on the left side where it connects to a fitting just under the fuse panel.

The other end of the fitting connects to the fuel expansion tank that is just above the windshield washer fluid reservoir, in the upper part of the front, left wheel well.

The tank in the above picture is not in it's normal location because I removed the windshield washer tank so I could remove my front valance/spoiler

Kevin,

I had not bothered to trace the line all the way to the front of the car like you did, but my curriousity has now been satisfied, thank you very much! Once your reply and Craig's established that the splice was factory, and you showed me where the vacume from the TB went to #31, I quit thinking about it. My engine and trans should go back in next weekend!

Darn, I just crawled out of the engine compartment and my delima on the small vacuum line from the throttle body has NOT been answered. There are two fittings coming off the TB (as shown on item #13), a larger one (perhaps 3/8's or so) which is #30 connecting to #31, and then a small vacuum line sized one that I still cannot figure out where it goes. I can not tell from the diagram what #14 goes to, and I don't see anything in my engine compartment that resembles #14. Can anyone describe what theirs goes to? I do have two other 3.2's coming over today I think so I may have to get a volunteer to let me remove their air box so I can look back behind there and figure it out. So how do you think my fellow Pelicanites will respond when they get I here I and ask if I can take their car apart?

Russ,
Can you show a pic of the area of the oil filler cap? The line you're inquiring about goes to a fitting in that area. There shold be a line that goes from #13 (thermo switch) to the top of # 31. Post a pic of #31.
Regards,
J.P.

Russ,

The other fitting on #13 goes to a port on the intake. The open port is right next to the rubber wye fitting that connects those small black plastic lines to the vaccuum diaphragm things at the back of the fuel rails. All you need is a small length of rubber hose to make a "U" shape that will connect the two fittings.

Here's a picture to confirm

Also, I don't know what #14 is exactly. Parts diagram just calls it a "hose". As you can see, my car just has a piece of vaccuum hose stuck on there to make the connection. Maybe Porsche used a v-shaped hose to make the connection instead of a straight piece of hose. A straight piece of hose that is stressed by bending it into a "U" could eventually crack when it ages and dries out?

JP,

I'm working on that fuel line issue right now.

Part # 14 is the U shaped hose. The other port goes to the top of the mushroom fitting in the oil cap cluster area. It's important to makes sure that the correct line goes to the correct connection on the thremo switch.
Regards,
J.P.

Kevin,
Thanks.
