Willow Springs Test Day Success

Well I got in 50-60 laps yesterday at Willow! Car was very fast
I cut 3 seconds of my previous best time at willow. Ran in the 1:33's. I tend to run 1-2 seconds faster in races so their may be a 1:31 in my future. had one hiccup, burned the LR up ( too low of pressure) corrected that problem w a 1.5 pound Adj.

Wow. That's a pretty great first day for a brand new car.

No teething issues?

Can you give us more details about the car? What's the keg for on the passenger side? And what's the fastest time at Willow?
Looks like a very serious machine...

Like my buddy Jack said, pretty phenomenal results @ Willow for your first day out with the car! What motor are you running and how much does that bad boy weigh? What kind of tires?

I have raced this car for over 5 years, we just finished some upgrades, new engine, new setup some lightening ect ect
The beer keg is the oil tank (20 quarts) 210 degree oil temp on the hottest days. This car was pretty sorted just needed some massaging. Tires are Kuhmo Victo racers. I ran my fasted lap ever at willow yesterdy 1:33.4. I left 1-2 seconds on the table. the engine is a 2.5 L full race! too many upgrades to list. 220 RWHP,
car is 1920 pounds. Any more questions???

Jack, no teething issues at all other than some jet changes, and some tire pressure adjustments, I work long and hard to make sure when I haul my car to the track I usually have just little problems.

YOur car sounds great - Awsome actually, but I am kind of concerned for you with the oil inside the cabin, I mean, you do know oil is flamable and hard extinguish in a fire right?

Im not being critical of your set up, more then anything I like to know what kind of oil tank that is and how it is mounted to assure your safe, say in roll or t-bone form the pasenger side.

The tank was mounted by a reputable fabricator. and yes it is a little more dangerous with that tank sitting beside me, but hell if Im going to that big track in the sky it might as well be in a race car!

The passenger-compartment oil tank is a pretty common race mod. Minkoff's car has a cage, so an intrusion that would lead to the tank rupturing is unlikely (but not unthinkable). I think the day-to-day issue would be ambient heat, but that's less of an issue in a track car , and a Cool Shirt solves the problem.

Actually it is a combustible liquid. It has a very high flash point, usually greater than 400 degrees F, otherwise it would burn off during normal healthy engine use. And it's not to hard to extinguish, especially if you have an onboard AFFF fire suppresion system.

and of coarse I have an onboard fire system with a nozzle on the fuel cell, the engine and of coarse me!

i did have an engine fire 4 years ago at willow. my helper forgot to put in one main jet and while I was in the car trying to start a hot engine pouring raw fuel on the hot headers a fire ensued and the track workers could not get the fire out w their exstiguishers, I finally pushed the :red" button and wa la fire out!

Thanks Halo

PS I actually got it running and finished out the test session!

Wouldn't you also be a second faster with Hoosiers instead of Kumho's?

That is a stupid fast time on what I assume are skinny 225 series Kumho's and with only a duck butt. These times are about what the normal Joe in a flared RS look with a bigger motor, huge tires and a huge, sky high rear wing run at that track.

I really have to wonder with your car set up like this, wouldn't you have more fun with a 2.0L in there running in huge race groups with VARA or HSR? There would be so many identical cars to compare your self too. I've seen this car in person many times and it is NICE!

So Mark- are you not running WSIR w/VARA today? Why are you posting here? You should be racing the enduro!

Wow, that's great stuff!

If I can fill up a large bag of Ben Franklins this Fall, I hope to also drop a "moderate" 2.5 into my car. I can't afford the maintenance of a balls-out race build...so it will be a little less extreme in compression and rev limit...but it is very inspiring to see these VARA/HSR cars running such quick times at Big Willow.

Well I guess as long as you feel safe. I just couldnt get my self to sit next to hot oil during a race. I would move the tank to the smugler box.

That's just me - All and all your car does look great and it sounds like it performs match the look

Forgive my ignorance, but why is the oil tank there? For better balance? And why 20 quarts--how does it circulate the oil?

When you figure out how to get 20 qts. in the box, post it.

I must admit I am kinda curious as to the advantage of an even larger oil capacity than the stock 911's. If cooling is the main consideration, there are certainly cooling setups that are almost "too" effective even with the stock tank. I know the stock tank can also be baffled and (slightly) enlarged by Smart Racing Products for improved pickup characteristics.
