Help! First time 911 owner. I have a 1988 911 Carrera w/3.2 engine that has 104,000 miles on it. Every time I unscrew the oil cap to check the oil the engine dies. The manual says to check engine oil with engine running and then it says to screw cap back on tightly or engine will idle rough. Well my car won't allow you to remove the cap at all. As soon as you start unscrewing the cap it idles rough for just a second or two then dies. Any ideas on what is causing this and how I might fix it. I've done some mechanical work in the past on car and boats but this is a new ballgame. Any comments would be appreciated.
Thanks, Mark Hooper ![]() |

I have noticed also that my idle changes when I open up the filler, but mine does not die. I'm curiously awaiting the opinions of the experts!

There's supposed to be a restrictor in one of the oil tank breather hoses (I believe it's hose 25 below) to allow the engine to idle when the cap is off.
![]() Above picture is for '88 911. The same restrictor applies for some other cars (like Kobalt's 81 & newer) and the part number is the same. Do a search with "restrictor", "tank", "hose" etc. and see what comes up. I'm certain this issue has been covered before.

There is a vacumm in the oil tank due to hoses that run from the oil tank to the air filter housing and intake. You should notice a drop in rpm's when you remove the oil cap. Car should not die. You may have another vacumm leak and taking the oil cap off is creates too much of an air leak and the car dies. Another thought is your rpm's are to low. Should be set at 800 rpms with the oil cap on.

As KTL states there is a restrictor. Pull off the upper oil breather line coming out of the neck of the oil fill (where the cap is connected to). Between the end of the hose and the oil filler neck there is a white funnel shaped piece. If it's not there then that's what's causing your problem. Get a new one and all should be good.
In the meantime you can take a pair of vice grips or for three hand operation get a large plier and clamp down on that hose when you want to check the oil. If the funnel is there, and the vice grip idea doesn;t work then you have a leak somewhere else...but I would suspect that a massive leak somewehre else would be notcieable at all times. Look for the funnel restrictor. It's pretty small. 5 of them could fit in the palm of your hand. When installing a new one point the funnel peak towards the oil filler neck so oil can run down the line into the tank if it needs to.
