Aside from standard PPI type info you may want to know what boost level he's been running at and for how long. If he has an intercooler he probably bumped it up.

Also, see if he has additional oil cooling. This is a common/desirable addition.

I've had a 76 930 for almost 20 years. The first thing I did was put an intercooler and k-27 in. That made a bunch of difference in how soon the boost came in and the whallop it put when it came in. I am a guy who has done everthing conceivable to a 76 that can be done. I know John Walker has issues with the 76 and 77's and can correct all my $$ mistakes by telling you to steer clear. In all those years I've had the beast I've only spent 45K getting it where it will put the whup ass on any Turbo out there regardless of the year. Go with the Big Ass Reds in the for sure. I went with Ruf front and rear spoilers, and a Turbo S tail. Where it used to get squirrely at 150+ its ass is planted like a hippo. Huge oil cooler to fill that opening in the front. I live in Texas and can run at boost for extended periods of time without ever getting close to hot. Of course you'll want to go to an aftermaket exhaust which has been discussed here on the board thousands of times. Delete all the BS stuff that probably doesn't work anyway and you have a 2500 lb rocket. All I know is I can cover a measured mile (on a closed course of course) in about 19.5 seconds. But it also has the cams, bigger valves, is a 3.2 with higher compression, this, that and some other crap I forget about. The boys that built the engine tell me the 76 and 77's could flow higher fuel rates etc, so can make more power than later models. John Walker can verify that. I do know if you spend enough you can turn a sows ear into a silk purse. It's only $$$$$$$$$$

Main issues:

Stock -76 doesn't have intercooler. Check for boost levels he's been running and check compression and leekdown numbers. Don't be surprized if overall compression is really low (it has laughably low C/R of 6.5:1), just make sure it's even on all cylinders. Check leekdown (important!), excessive boost will break top compression rings, and you might not notice it. Check for leaks at cylinder base ("uneven mating surface" - usual problem), check 3:rd gear synch rings, they are usually worn. Check oil pipes going to front cooler for dents.

If user went so far to fit intercooler he hopefully fitted better brakes too...take pics, check it out and come back later.

First generation 930's are nice car but needs lots of (pricey) tweeks to get them right. Intercooler, bigger brakes and better oil cooler are first priority.

Yes there is. The ROW put out 260 hp as opposed to the 245 for the US version. The muffler is about the only thing you'll want to keep. Almost everyone will tell you that muffler is about as good as any aftermaket you can buy.

If you had to choose a 76 930 or a 95 993 row, which would you choose?

76 930 is more "a vintage cool thing to have". -95 993 is more "usable car".

I would take 930...it's like asking wheter you would rather have Aston Martin DB5 or brand new BMW Z8.

Z8 is good car but Astond Martin has class.
