changing from ldh to rhd

has anyone done this (not that you need to in usa)?

is it costly (parts) or is it just labour intensive?

i have a friend considering buying a lhd in the uk but is interested in finding out whats involved in changing over.

i tried to put him off but hes curious.

rhd -> lhd -> rhd

UK Magazine 911 & Porsche World has written some articles on this topics. If you can get the parts cheap and do it your self, it could be a nice winter project. If you must buy the labour, I think it would be very expensive.

Then you have to consider the depr of the car, a rebuild like that would almost have greater depr than a real lhd.

would never attempt it, I had a LHD car (yank tank) when I was stationed in the UK and it's not that big a deal...but it's possible I am sure.

thanks for the replies.

the idea is that if it is fairly straightforward and cheap enough - just labour intensive - then he will do it himself.

is it easily reversed?

thanks for the leads.

i agree, i have no problem with lhd in the uk.

It is neither quick nor cheap. 911 & Porsche World described a 993TT conversion that was horrily complicated and expensive. An earlier car would be easier but still involves cutting and welding. Just think about it: the footwells are different, pedal box needs to be cut out and an new one welded in etc.

Try a phone call to maybe Autofarm, or perhaps Steve Monk who backdated the 74 RS to long hood also featured in 911 World mag.

Cheers,
Richard

Rich, converting from LHD to RHD is IMHO pointless, I have a LHD 911 and live in London & the New Forest, and I've never had any real problems with it (ok the odd multi-story car park is an issue, but I don't use them often)

I would worry about the resale value too, no matter how good your friends handy work is, when he comes to sell it the buyer will ask who did the work and probably be concerned about it not being done by a reputable garage.

My advice is to drive it as LHD for a couple of months (as Porsche intended it) and if he really can't get to grips with LHD, and i find it highly unlikley we wont, then look into it.

As i understand it there's a fair bit of chopping and welding needed to "flip" the dash and you need to chop up the footwells to fit the pedal assemblies. Bear in mind a nice RHD early dash itself is well over 300gbp these days, without thinking about all the tinware you need
