Steering Wheels 85' 911

I am thinking about changing the steering wheel on my 85'. The original just doesn't seem right to me. So I have a few questions:
1. How do you measure diameter of steering wheel? Outside diameter is 15" and inside 13" on original. Most the ones I'm looking to change to seem to be 13-14". Does the size make a big difference? I normally wouldn't think so, but without power steering I'm curious.
2. Is it very hard to change a steering wheel? Do you just need the wheel and hub adaptor and your ready to go? Any special tools involved?
3. Which wheel would you recommend? I kinda like the Momo Prototipo or the competition. Would want to get the Porsche logo on it though. I have also seen some by RGB Wheels I like. Are those any good? Any input would be great!

Not sure how wheels are measured, but its usually in CM, not inches. Size of the steering wheel only matters (I think) to the extent that a particular size wheel might block your view of the gauges, though some have twisted their gauges as necessary.

Very easy to change the steering wheel - you'll need a 27MM socket and a long-ish bar for leverage. Do a search on steering wheel removal - there are several threads on the topic.

I replaced the stock steering wheel on my '85 with a 930S wheel purchased here.

New wheel:

Replaced mine with a momo. If I were to do it again I'd get a wheel with a slightly deeper dish to bring the wheel back a bit more toward me. The smaller diameter does obscure the view of the top of the gauges hence the twisted speedo.

The 930S looks real nice. Is it about the same size as the stock? Can you still view the gauges without any problems? Did you use the spacer they sell? Thanks.

No,

930S steering is smaller than stock and will block your speedo between 65 and 120 MPH.

Here's a pic of a Momo Club 4 in my 85. I liked it better than the 930S wheel for some reason.

Here's the wheel in my 87. It's a 993 RS/GT1 wheel.

Keep in mind that with most aftermarket wheels, the hub is centered in the wheel. On the factory wheel, the hub is below centerline.
If you have long legs, you may have leg room issues (like me) with an aftermarket wheel. As mentioned above, the dish depth of a wheel is important. A flatter wheel will be very close to the dash. Momo makes a long hub as well as spacers to bring the wheel away from the dash. Momo also makes 3/4" spacers and if that isn't enough, sparco makes a long spacer. The second pix is the long hub with the sparco spacer. I also use two 3/4" spacers to bring the wheel back past my knees.

I would be interested in your stock wheel if you decide to sell it.

Has anyone tried a Grant steering wheel? From the above I have determined the stock wheel must be 15". Since I would like to still view my gauges I looked around for 15" wheels. Found a grant one that I like, here it is:
http://www.grantproducts.com/grant.fm$retrieve?seqnum=123190&html=grantdetail

They do sell an installation kit for Porsche.

Any oppinions on this one? Otherwise the 930S is probably my choice.

Momo Fighter and with 2" spacer to get a more relaxed/reclined driving position.

Notice Grant wheel has 5 screws...most Momo or sparco have 6. The spacer or mounting you would then use wouldn't fit.

EDIT:
The Grant model shown in this thread is a nice design and they even have a 14" version ( 764). My mistake. They make a Porsche-specific hub with 5 bolts and also optional thinner (1") or thicker (2") spacer additions. My fear is that their hub is not a "safety-collapsibe" design like Momo...but Grant also offers a 5 bolt/6 bolt adaptor so you can use Momo/Sparco hubs.

Hmm...looks nice in 14 and 15" versions...much like the prototypo..and the larger size doesn't obscure the gauges and retains the leverage, lower effort, and finer-control of a larger diameter.

This question, however...how bad/good is a vinyl wrap instead of leather. May even be better in that it won't wear like leather. Nice price of about $80 thru places like Summit, too.

Always going a bit outside the "box"....
