Question porsche oil cooler

I have a 74 911 with no external oil cooler, and I live in Dallas, TX. I want to put a good oil cooler on it, and I would like some opinions on which one to purchase. Thank you

Please use the search, search for "oil cooler". There are lots of opinions on this. You could use the elephant racing hard lines and a carrera radiator-type fender cooler, for example.

Welcome to the bullentin board.

If you look at the Tech Forum main page you'll see search feature in the bottom right hnad corner.

I guarantee you if you search "oil cooler" in the search system you'll be reading for hours. This is a very popular question.

Cheers to low oil temps.

My apologies. Please ignore my post and refer to GrindingGears' post, as he demonstrated the proper way to respond to a new member.

btw, k, I have been around the block even if my stats here do not indicate the fact. In any case, I apologize for my post, and congratulate GrindingGears for showing me the right way.

nick, i was in the same situation as you. i wanted a bolt and run system. so i searched hi and low for an entire system from a donor car. bingo! found a 87 car with the entire system intact at the local pcar salvage yard. kinda liked the one stop shopping. you should, post your location in your signature. some local guy may drop a bomb on you and sell you a system. i would go, with a stock system. just me, two pennies worth.

I agree with Cliff, go for a stock system. Pelican sells all of the components new, so if there's a particular part you're having trouble finding in good used condition then you can always buy it new.

I put a 993 TT oil cooler inside the fender on my 1975, it works beautifully and I highly recommend it.

Thanks for the advice. I found a local salvage yard. Does anybody know which from which to which year 911 is a direct swap without too much fabrication?

the entire cooler from a carrera will fit like a glove. only glitch is you need to make sure which hose you need that goes from the tstat to the crossover tube. there is two types. just for reference, i paid $900 for the entire system, including the fan and factory wiring harness. i bet prices go up in the summer time.

I have no experience with the 993TT cooler. (Would love to see pics though)

I believe Vash (Cliff) is refering to the '85-'89 Carrera cooler.

Correct me if I'm wrong, I think the Carrera cooler went from the 20 (?) row, "brass tube type" cooler to the "radiator type" cooler in late 84 to 85......

My 85 had the radiator type. I'm not sure of the build date on my car but this should be good enough info for Nick to search.

Here's the tech article Philip mentioned: http://www.pelicanparts.com/techarticles/911_carrera_oil_cooler/911_carrera_oil_cooler.htm

Here's an excellent thread: Carrera cooler install

Pic of earlier Brass tube cooler (Thanks braddb_82SC):

Pic of Later Carrera cooler with Fan (Thanks Fintstone):
(Note : The first two years of the radiator type did not come with a fan. Otherwise it's the same)

Caution:
RickM says that the first and later Carrera coolers were the same except for the fan.

Well....mostly true.

The earlier radiator style fans also did not have the bung to which the fan's thermostat attaches....of course the later radiator versions had the 14mm threaded connection.

Way back when I replaced the trombone cooler on my C3 w/ the Turbotrol cooler(now called Lempke) worked great on road and track till it tried to cool my first 3.6. Even there it did a good job as long as ambients were < ~72&degF
