Gears and Clutch
When you shift in to reverse you should hold in the clutch for 5 seconds or so before shifting easily in to reverse. But what about 1st gear should you hold in the clutch for a few seconds before shifting in to 1st?

If the Synchro is good, no. It should be able to synch for you. If you have to hold for 5 seconds, then the synchro is done and it needs replacing.
If this is the case, until you rebuild, only shift to 1st at a dead stop and only after shifting into 2nd.
