Need to get torxed
Where can I get a 12 point double-torx bit to fit CV joint bolts?
Preferably in the SF bay area. Allens fit, but it's just too easy to strip them out. |
We sell them...

Surprisingly, a lot of auto parts chain-stores carry them if you need a cheap one in a pinch. Otherwise, I'd track down a Snap-On/Mac/Cornwell tool truck. Sears does not carry them (in-store). Oh, and they are commonly called "triple square" bits.

Chuck,
Get out the front door, turn right, walk 3 blocks toward El Camino Real, visit your local Kraegen's store, they sell those. Or, Pepboys. |
Not a torx, they are 6 pointed. Double torx, 12 point.
I think Wayne's tool is the right one. Kragen doesn't have them. But thanks for directions to Kragen, I need some oil ;) |

Lisle is a good "made in USA" product that has a lifetime warranty. They make them for most other brands.

Chuck, this is your lucky day.
I happen to have right here a HAZET tripple square, 8mm, both a socket and a wrench. I just bought them from www.samstagsales.com ( because Pelican does not carry HAZET). It turns out that they were the wrong size, I needed 10mm. They can both be yours for $31, which is what I paid. I'll ship them for free because you are a great guy. PM if interested. |
I too have the Lisle brand. Good quality hardened, black oxide bits that come in kit form. One strike against them is that they aren't built into sockets. You can easily cut them down (they're about 2-1/2 in. long) and then insert them into a socket

Chuck,
I bought mine set of 3 at Pepboys, I saw them the other day still at Pepboys. I have also seen them at Napa, Autozone, and Sears. A set of 3 goes for $12 or such. |
Just to pile on poor Chuck; they are called "triple squares" or "XZN" bits. I like the German ones (Stahwille, Hazet, Elora). I bought a set of cheap triple square bits once when I was in a pinch and they turned out to be made of a special metalic cheese alloy.
Triple squares from Hazet and Elora are also available in long shaft (120-140mm depending on diameter) versions which are handy for CV joint bolts and 964 head studs. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1087569864.jpg -Chris |
