gasket sealant on upper valve covers

When I removed the upper valve covers on my 1980 sc they were obviously leaking. The covers don't look warped when placed on glass. Is it worth applying some gasket sealant on the new gaskets before installing to ensure no leaks? I know the 6 ft lb torque yada yada but I have never had much success with dry valve covers.

Thanks, Graham

How old are the gaskets? I have always used the stock graphite gaskets on the upper covers with no leaks. Use the green silicone gaskets on the bottom ones.

I have never used any gasket material on the upper covers. There is almost no chance for a leak, just make sure you use new gasket (they don't cost much) and that the covers are not warped (they don't see much heat).

The upper valve covers can also warp due to over-tightening (usually in trying to stop the leak in the first place). Don't ask me how I know. :>)

Anyway, if your valve covers aren't warped and you're using a good gasket, then there shouldn't be a leak, so I either something is amiss with your covers or the gasket, or maybe the oil is coming from somewhere else?

I would shy away from any sort of gasket sealer as it has the potential to simply cause more problems than it solves.

No fun when you go to take them off for your next valve adjust. No fun at all cleaning it off the ribs. When I got my car, there was silicone on the gaskets and all over. I think some of it got lose and went into the sump. I guess that's what the screen is for. All good now.

Plane them flat - use sandpaper on a piece of galss and rub until shiny all over.

Everyone's stomach is turning just from the suggestion of the gasket goop.... Oly do that if you are about to sell the car to a hated enemy....
