oil drain plug gasket

I recently purchased the pelican basic maintenance kit and am getting ready to do my first oil change. Well the kit came in and if the oil drain plug gaskets are here they are not marked. I think I figured out what they are, but can someone verify that the picture below is the gasket used on the oil drain plug? In a previous post someone mentioned that the gasket for the engine and tank plugs are different? I have 2 that both look like below. Will that work on engine and tank?

They are the same size and are used interchangeably. Those are them. They are called crush washers.

My tank drain plug is a different size than the engine case plug. I've never known why...I used to think everyone's was that way.

Cool

These can be bought at Pep Boys. They come in a number of different sizes. I have often wondered, given Porsche's penchent for exactness, that the factory ones didn't fit better.

Here's a question for you...and I don't mean to hi-jack this thread, but...it seems as though the seal on my engine drain plug is leaking pretty good, so I'd like to replace it. Unfortunately, I only have 350 miles on the oil that's in there.

Aside from just trying to pull the plug really fast and plugging the hole with my thumb and swapping out the seal, does anyone have a better way of doing this?

Randy,

You could just drain the oil thats in the engine into a large receptical, change your crush washer and then use a funnel to pour the oil back into the tank.

If you have a helper to hold the funnel and you go slowely, it will keep you from spilling any oil on the engine.

Thanks, Gerard, that just may be the way I go. Appreciate the quick response.

randy, i have a brandnew drain pan hermetically sealed in a trash bag just for that purpose. embarrasingly enough, i have used it three times. usually because i dumped the oil to fix something, only to find i need to fix something else that required more oil dumping. sooner or later, i will get it. i need a big bag of crush washers.

Hmmmm, a new funnel or a new drain pan..... Seems like the drain pan would make this a lot easier. Thanks Vash! Sounds like my new plan of attack.

The crush washers for all of my fluid drain or fill plugs (engine, oil tank and transmission) are the same size. 22x27 mm. For some reason the washer I get for the oil tank is copper. Aluminum, copper, plastic, what's the difference? As long as it seals the connection between the plug and the reservoir, it's good enough for me.

And like Ron said, you can usually reuse these guys a few times as long as you don't Hercules-tighten your plug each time!
