Starter Relay

Hi All,
Got the hot starting problem with the 911.
Gonna do the solenoid on starter, and wanted to do relay. Problem is I don't know where relay is. It isn't in Benley manual. I have a '81 911SC. Thanks Steve

If you're referring to the factory starter solenoid, it's integrated as part of the starter.

The 911 has a LONG battery cable and has to be in top shape at both ends. There is no 'hot start' relay trick that I know of if that's what you're thinking. It is a 914 trick that works from what I read. I just use good starters, batteries and cables. Problems are non existant.

Yep, my hot start problem was fixed with new cables. Got tired of parking on a slope on rest stops to push start it on road trips.

You can rig an additional aftermarket relay on the 911. It is a crutch however for a weak solenoid, bad connections or all of the above. Fix it right. Start cleaning every contact front to back. Make sure you have a good battery. If nothing changes, replace starter. That did it for me. Go with a new high torque unti.

Thanks,
I figured there was no relay, but "performance parts" has them in the catalog..........must be earlier(or later) model. Should just throw those catalogs away. I didn't realize heat made the starter not work well. Because it works just fine on a cold start and most warm starts, guess I'll just go with new cables, new starter. I hate that feeling of not knowing if the car will start. Look pretty lame too pushing my beautiful car down the street.

The lightweight starter you can get at PP is a slick gizmo. It will spin that eingine nicely and save you some weight. It also is smaller and installs easier, therefore.

Cheers, George
