this was some info posted:
914 "chassis", 3.2 Carrera motor on Webers, 17" rims with polished stainless moondiscs, periscope rear view mirror, '55 Continental body. It's an Aussi car so maybe the guys from down under can give us more info.

Well, I dont dislike it. Any idea what the pod above the driver is? I thought it might be a mirror like on a 512, but I dont see a piece of plexi-glass in the roof that would allow the driver to see it.

Nice car. Actually amazing how "modern" this 356 looks.
Today there's quite some "retro" styling in some of the cars (BMW's oversculpted M-4 is one of them), this one looks very "credible". In fact, squinting the eyes somewhat, it's got even some of the elements of the Audi TT coupé, or that Nissan (is it Z350?): high waistline, low "speedster" roofline...

I recall seeing that car for sale in Excellence about a year ago for $100K (US$ not Aussie $).
Pretty wild and expensive too.

This was at the RM auction during the Monterrey historic races about 3 years ago. There was a writeup in Sports Car Marketplace at that time. I think I still have the issue.

The pod on the roof is a rear view mirror.

I really like the chopped roofline and how it blends into the rear.
I could do without all the scoops, they don't really fit the car and looked tacked on. Clean it up and that car would be hot. Photoshop anyone?

I believe the car was built by Duttons down in Australia. they wanted something retro looking, yet fierce enough to run competitively in the Targa Tasmania and other such long distance events. That's the way I heard it. sure is a wild thing!!!

Bird. It's the word...

Correct, it's a RHD Australian built car. I sat in it about 4 years ago... extremely tight fit. I didn't realise it had left the country. I have a complete write-up of it's construction somewhere, I'll chase it up.
Definitely runs a 3.2 on webers with a G50. Apparently all the body parts are from porsches (although modified) with virtually no glass work.

Aah, the "silver bullet" - I wondered where that had disappeared to. Tre and John are right: some long time Porsche racers/builders in Melbourne built it (in about 6 weeks!!). It had/has a bundle of trick stuff. They got it done days before the Targa Tas event and it ran faultlessly. I've always liked it.

Wait a minute...The pics below are from a Thunderhill Driver's Ed on March 1, 2002. I remember very clearly the guy who was "with" the car (not the owner) said it was built on a 914. But it's LHD. Was there more than one of these things made, or is it worthy of a replica car?

I love this car - last time I saw it was in Melbourne in '96. I remember taking photos of it - I'll try and find them though I'm sure there'd only be one 356 like this out there.
The third photo in the original post shows the car with Targa Tasmania plates (Aust) and it looks to be LHD from the position of the roof mirror. Nick |
