7200 red line tach

Hi all,

Quick question, were there any other porsches which used the 7200 rpm red line tach other than the ealry Ss. I have bought a NOS 7200 tach, but written on the top (not the back) is 4zlyn/4tah, or something like that, and I wonder if that meant is is for a four cylinder car - hope not ?

Thanks

Alan,

Try it and see. If it is a 4-cyl calibration it will read 6000 RPM when your 6-cylinder engine is 4000 RPM. Is it the face you want? Not to worry. Send it in and have it recalibrated – not expensive.

Best,
Grady

Hi Grady,

Im sure it can be calibrated but I did hope I could just fit it straight in. Also other 4 cylinder tachs I have seen (such as the 912) have the 4cyl stamped on the back not the side section and also don't have the 7200 red line. This one has not have the face removed and does look to be NOS.. still not sure though. I bought it from the guy in New Zeland whom had all the R (?) stuff on ebay recently.

Alan,

It may work perfectly as expected.

My points are:

1) Do you like the face? If so, great. If not, either return it or have it fixed.
2) Does it work with your engine (and ignition)? If so, great. If not return it or have it fixed.
3) Is the fact it has been tampered with and isn’t NOS make it something you won’t use? If so, send it back or have it fixed. If not, who cares.

If you can’t return it and nothing works for you, give it to someone who can use it and chalk it up to a poor e-bay experience. In the overall scheme of things there are more important battles to win. I have played Don Quixote many times. Usually to my personal satisfaction but harm to the pocketbook.

Best,
Grady
