Question rear fiberglass bumper questions/advice needed

Hello,

I would like to install a rear fiberglass bumper on my SC. Any brands that I should stay away from?. Are used tough to come by? Do they bolt to the existing bumper shocks?? any advice is appreciated!

thanks, Matt

Matt,
You will want to remove the existing bumper shocks for the huge weight savings. I had a shop put a FG bumper on. I am sure it is not as easy as it looks. Some amount of fabricating has to be done like making brackets and cutting out for the exhaust pipe.
I was advised to choose a fiber glass bumper that had the series of vertical slots across the lower lip to provide better cooling for the exhaust system.

My B&W pretty much bolted on

Ditch the bumper shocks, bolt to the fenders

Thanks guys,

If I lose the bumper shocks, does the new bumper somehow attach to those two points. Seems like the center area of the bumper needs to be supported somewhere in addition to the fenders. Bill, those slots look great and they must be functional too! 5 years ago I removed the giant black bumper pads, but now I would like to go the next step!
thanks, Matt

we've made an additional center support between the tail lamps by using 1/8" aluminum sheet. It sticks out below the reflector like a someone sticking their tongue out. We bend a gentle S curve into it across the width of the reflector so the bumper to body seal is left intact and the fiberglass bumper slides over the top of the tongue. This way the resulting sandwich of alloy sheet, then bumper , gives it additional support and heat insulation. Remember to round the edges of the "tongue" so the corners don't bite into the bumper. Between the extension support tubes, the edges of the rear fenders, and this, you will have a very solid installation

Hello again,

How did you attach the new aluminum sheet tongue to the existing body sheet metal? Drill holes and use small nuts/bolts? thanks again,

Matt
