Brake Dust be Gone!

Ok, so how in the world do i get rid of this brake dust on my Fuchs? it seems to be embedded into the metal. I've tried all kinds of products, scrubbed for hours with no luck. All 4 of my fuchs look like this..

anyone have any ideas? thanks.

Hate to say it, but the anodizing is wasted.

Professional strip and polish in order. Looks like someone used wheel cleaner that was for chrome wheels. Could always DIY by painting the centers with semi - flat and having a local shop polish the lips. That's what I did.

There's this mythical diety by the name of Al Reed. He's a "healer".

has anybody ever tried polishing them using a dremel, or is this a strictly zen experience by using your hands until the fingers cramp up... or going w/ Mr. Reed?

Jasco is an industrial paint remover any haerdware store should have it. DO NOT get it on anything you do not want srtipped bare. It will clean everything off your rims and they will polish up beautifully with Wenol (Red)

I polished mine with a hand drill attachment I got at Home Depot for a few dollars. It was a 4 inch disc made of 10 - 15 layers of cloth sewn together with a shaft in the middle for the drill chuck. Some Mothers wheel polish and a few hours later they all look like mirrors (PO had removed the anodization so they were easy to do).

There was a guy named Alex Kagan - I think it woas on the text version of Rennlist before the html based boards appeared. Anyway, back in the neolithic he did his wheels and since it was not the paleolithic, I think he used a Dremel or something similar.

I think the best way to polish would be to spin the wheel on its own axis and use a random orbit at a 90 deg angle. That would minimize any scratch formation.

I'll never do it tho - rather pay to have somebody else do that kind of stuff.

BTW, brake dust is corrosive to Fuchs & gets worse the longer its on there. If on a long trip its smart to at least hose them off every day or two. Don't let it sit on there for weeks...

The P21s is the stuff to use. As the post above said, don't use the regular wheel cleaners!

I use the Pagid Black Pads on my DD. They are some Dusty Buggers, If I let the dust set its a real pain to get off. After I cleaned the wheels I started to hose them of every morning, thats the only way to keep em clean. the draw back is black brake dust streak on my drive way that I have to spray off on the weekends.

Once you remove the anodizing by polishing the bare aluminum will tend to oxidize. I've use some great stuff called Speedy All Metal Polish "Carnauba Wax & Silicone Polymer Protection". It's for polished metal surfaces like tanker trucks, truck gas tanks, etc.
I use it on my polished 944 Turbo wheels once a year.
