So.....your 3.0 SC engine..........Is it stock?
No mods? What does it take to get those carbs on it? What mods need to be made to get it into my ole 68? SvK |
See the other thread for details on the conversion. My engine is internally stock. I run headers with a custom X-pipe exhaust I built as well as modified Zenith carbs. It definately make more HP than a stock SC. I think BA's book suggests something like 10HP from backdated exhaust and 15 for carbs meaning my motor should be somewhere around 200-210HP maybe a little more with my exhaust setup. The best thing is that with the short gears in the 901 the motor will pull any gear from 1000 rpm, around town I shift at 3000 or so with no trouble. Stand on the gas however and your right hand gets really busy grabbing gears! FWIW I elected to use the stock 2.0 clutch which had a little slippage at full throttle rather than risk damge to the 901. The trans has held up perfectly other than a bad second gear synchro which was bad before the conversion and it's gotten a little worse with more mileage. I love the 901's shift pattern as well as it's short gears so much that I had to really think hard before I bought the G50 for the track car project but I couldn't pass up the deal I was getting.

on the other hand...
some early production 68 911L cars retained the aluminum engine case from the 67 model years. If your car has the sand cast aluminum case, rather than the later mag case, then you have a strong engine that will allow options to increase your cars displacement all the way up to 2.7 liters.
However, this is very costly, but then again, the sand cast aluminum cases are becoming rare and costly. (why could that be) A bump to 2.2 or 2.3 liters will work easily with the aluminum case. The least expensive way to gain horse power would be to install a larger displacement engine from a later year car. I do not recommend this action. The value of early cars is based (unfortunately) on originality. Read more of Bruce's book! And a few others. Research what other 68 911L owners are doing with thier cars and you will be able to make an informed decision about your car, I say, sort out the car first. Suspension, brakes, and driving strengths can go along way. After all of that, look at HP increases. edit: and, and, Shawn. :) |
I have a 68 engine in my 66 it has the 901/01 number stamped on it with the mag case 901/01 I beleve has the solex cams in it witch are close to S cams but smaller ports and valves with like 8.1/2 to One

Greg,
All 901/01 engines were aluminum 9.8:1 compression 911S engines ... including all of the 1968 ROW engines, which yours is, undoubtedly! Unless torn down and reassembled with other parts. |
Early_S_Man: for what its worth there were ROW 911L's that didn't have the S engine in them. I know, I have one. :)

S man I have a 66 solex aluminum case 901/01 that is the stock engine for my 66 and came with solexes on it when I got the car, I bought a verry rusty 68 911 I think standerd (no s options) that Has the Mag case with the newer cam boxes and oil fed tentioners I thought the S engine was a 901/02??

As far as retaining originality of the car, a 3.0 longblock using the existing webers (with larger jets and venturi's installed) and the original exhaust would be easily reversable if he kept the 2.0 longblock and related parts.

JNadal - THANKS!
too bad they don't have any real info on the engine. let's say one were to buy this engine...and it needed a rebuild. would parts be difficult to find for a EURO 1968 2.0S? anything i should be aware of in doing the transplant? |

I have a 68 911S longblock available in San Francisco. Contact me via email if your still interested. |
Any idea what engine number was the cutoff going from Aluminum to Magnesium? I found a '68L case from a seller across the country and am trying to figure it out from the part and engine number if it is indeed Aluminum. I am assuming if it says 901/01 I have a winner? He's sending me the numbers tomorrow...
