In what way was the 1968L engine a "neutered" S??
Ok,
I own a 1968 911L........(serial#338 0067) It is a neutered version for US market of the"S"......(the S was not available in US in 1968)....... I want my mech to retune it to what it was supposed to be......a 1968 "S" Questions: Do both cars share the same camshaft? Are the pistons the same? Are the heads the same? What would this project entail? How much money? Is it worth it? If I do this, would it cost just as much to go to a 2.2 S spec making it a dumb move to go to a 2.0 S spec SvK |
I believe the L was more along the lines of an E. Cast pistons etc. Maybe someone can set me straight.
Btw I live in Carlsbad too! :) |
hey neighbor
i'm in the village SvK |
The way I understand it, in order to meet USA smog laws at the time, the 911L ran the basic 911 engine for the year with an air pump. So, pistons & cylinders would be different, heads would be different, cams would be different, and (possibly) even the crankshaft...not sure about the crankshaft. It might be cheaper to try to source a used euro '68 S engine? I'm hoping Grady will weigh in on this one. He has a 1968...and decades ago experience leads me to believe it just may not be totally "original".;)

you meen buy a euro 1968 S engine outright??
I'll never find it....... svK |

Like everyone said, its not a detuned S motor, its a standard 911 motor of 1968. Its pistons, cams and crankshaft, I believe. Its big money to convert... not worth it IMHO. You're talking prices well above what you can buy a much later motor for, and you'll be non-concours at that point, so why not go with a 3.0 or something?
When the previous owner rebuilt my L motor, he rebuilt it with just the S cams (a configuration Porsche used in their rally cars in '68). The cost of a complete conversion was substantially higher than the nearly $8k the rebuild cost him. |
I recall a restrictor ring in the exhaust outlets installed on the T,s about that time The new (then) style heaterbox raised the output of the non S engine so close to that of an S that a ring was installed to choke the lessor engine .I think it was a gasket with a smaller hole between the exhaust and inlets for the muffler . I think it is mentioned somewhere in Bruce Anderson's book.

Dotorg....
Can I keep my 901 tranny if I went with a 3.0 engine? SvK |
No idea, I don't think so. I think the 2.2 and 2.4 are the only ones that fit it... although I'm by no means an expert.
I think you have to go 915. |
Too quote from Wayne's Book, "How To Rebuild & Modify 911 Engines" ......
2.2L S-Spec Engine "This engine is good for about 180 HP, and is one of the best small-displacement engines that you can build. Not a tremendous amount of torque on the low-end, but should be good for earlier, lighter-weight 911s." This is what I want to build........I like my 901 tranny and want to keep it...... So......let's list what I need to purchase to achieve this...... SvK |
A special flywheel would be needed so that you can use the 901 clutch. Call patrick motorsports, maybe they can help.

If your crank is like the E then that is good.
you will need pistons and cyl for the S. Heads from the 2.2 S or your heads redone. S Cams. MFI if you want that performance and if you have the money. Get your dizzy recurved to S spec or find an S dizzy The Rods I am not sure about. That is my favorite early engine! |
The restrictor rings were only used for a short period in the 1967 production run on 911 'Normal' engines ... until revised cams could be delivered and phased into production! The 911S-style heat exchangers gave a 10 hp boost to 140 hp ... too close to the 160 hp of the 911S for marketing comfort in Stuttgart! The revised cams restored 'Normal' engines to 130 hp, and kept the critics at bay!

See my post in your short stroke 3.2 thread, you can install a late engine with a 901

Thanx
Christian BTW........Whats your 0 to 60 spec on that setup of yours? |
Quicker than a 5.0 Mustang! I know that only because I've raced a few. I'd say sub 6 second but I've never timed it. I'm not certain how accurate my old speedo is, I think it's a little optomistic. Sometime in July bell and I are going to Dragway 42 for street trophy night to get some baseline numbers for our cars, we'll be sure and report back. FWIW several of my old drag racer friends have really been surprised by how quick my "little" 3.0 acelerates. The 901's short gears really help in the acceleration department.
BTW I like your sig, I have a similar saying, "I made a mistake once, I just wanted to know what it felt like" LOL I use it to tease my friends when they do something stupid. |
Christian,
I got another one....... "If only I were humble, I'd be perfect" SvK |
