breakerless Crane conversion with Bosch CDI?
Pelican has a whole Crane kit that requires switching in a electronic tach. So going breakerless would cost me $125 + the cost of a new tach.
They also have a crane pickup and installation kit for ~$50 cheaper that allows me to use my Bosch CD box and keeps my stock tach. The car is a '72 2.4 MFI T. My current Bosch CD box is good and I have a spare. The pickup and the kit sound like the better route for me. Is there anything Im overlooking? Do I need to spend the money on whole $125 conversion kit and a new tach or can just replace the points with the conversion trigger? Here's a screenshot from the online catalog. What do I need to order? ![]() TIA Last edited by Shuie; 06-29-2004 at 12:28 PM.. |

Sherman, YOu need the two lower selections. This was the XR700-0231 from Crane before it was split into a trigger and installation kit.
This will replace your points and send a signal to the Stock CD unit. Stock tach works great.

I read a few old posts where people had received bad petronix units. Sometimes multiple bad units. I also read some old posts about bad installation instructions being supplied with the Petronix. Im a dummy when it comes to this stuff. The last thing I need is bad set of installation instructions. I have a hard enough time following good instructions
![]() The old posts I saw indicated that when the Petronix works for people, it works really well. Im sure the Crane fails occasionally also but I didnt see anyone mention it here. Im going to carry my points as a spare anyway. |

I ordered mine (Crane conversion) from Pelican a while back. It's been installed on my '76 for a couple of years now. Works great, and no points to mess around with.

I have bad experience with Petronix too I my dad's Opel GT. My 1972 Porsche have a Crane Cams XR-700 Electronic ignition and I no have problem with it. The Crane was installed in the car 7 years ago. I have a MSD 6A too and works great.
