Porsche Crest Formally introducing myself

As I alluded to in thread http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/450358-70-911-sportomatic-rare-post4408128.html#post4408128 , I figure it's time to formally introduce myself.

I recently bought my first Porsche, a 1970 911T non-sunroof coupe with Sportomatic. While I'm fairly certain I saw this car at the PCA swap meet in Hershey this past March, I ended up buying it from European Collectibles. (Funny how it went from PA to CA to come back to PA again.) I actually don't have the car in my physical possession yet; it's in transit and should arrive toward the end of next week.

I've dabbled in old cars in the past and in my heart of hearts a 911 was what I always wanted. They first caught my attention in the early '70s - the days of the candy-colored RS, RSR and IROC cars. However, by the time I finally decided to pursue my dream car and not settle for something else, I found myself dealing with arthritis in both knees and in my left ankle. I made a conscious decision to look for a two-pedal 911 and suffer whatever slings and arrows may come my way as a result of making that decision. I also still like to DIY a bit and the prospect of a 964 or 993 Tip intimidated me; so despite their not always positive reputation, I decided a Sporto might be best for me.

I started looking in earnest in late 2006, had several near misses on some good and not-so-good cars and walked away from a few dogs too. I got discouraged at times but a few good folks kept me from getting down, and they deserve a shout out here. Though I missed out on a sweet SC coupe when Scott Douglas got his in a swap with his brother KD, both of them told me not to give up while extolling the virtues of their little yellow car. berettafan did too as did Macroni, who's been a great source of advice and support. He also lives nearby so I'm looking forward to following that cool Gulf Blue RS clone of his around some PA backroads.

Finally much credit goes to techweenie who not only offered great advice but helped me put the gears in motion to get this purchase done. The man with the Bob Dobbs avatar deserves much of the credit for helping me fulfill this dream.

I've mostly lurked this board for several years now; I've learned a lot and put much of that to use in tracking down and buying a 911 of my own. I now look forward to learning more about my car and, hopefully, contributing some knowledge back to these forums as well.

That's about all I have to say for now; everyone I know tells me I get too long-winded when I get going so that's probably more than enough anyway.

Thanks,
Ed

Let me be one of the first to welcome you, Ed. Actually I feel extremely lucky that I 'got' my car before you had a chance to buy it. =;>)
I look forward to seeing your posts about the progress you'll be making on your car once you receive it.

Ed, congrats on a neat car!

No slings and arrows are deserved for a system that won Porsche an 84-hour race 'round the 'ring in '67.

That's awesome. Bill was a tremendous help to me when I was dealing on my cabriolet. Enjoy your new car!

Beautiful early car!
A warm welcome. I have arthritis in my lower back and has had surgery to fixate the vertebrae some years back. That turned out to be of little success. But I enjoy the car as much as I can... I also have a wheelchair for transport as my legs are of little use for walking any distance! 50 meters is about it... I really should have servoed brakes...!

All the best to you!

It's here!

A bump to say that the car arrived a day early, on Wednesday night. The truck driver couldn't get down my street, so I had to meet him in the parking lot of a school a couple of blocks away. The T started up on the second turn, warmed up nicely given the 15-degree F weather, and I drove it home with no fuss. It definitely needs those H4s, though!

I'll post pics when it warms up a bit (9 F as I write) and when I tidy up my cluttered garage a bit as well.

By coincidence the T got here the same day as I got my first Pelican order: a replacement 2.2L window decal and a copy of our host's 101 Projects book. I'd like to thank him publicly for putting together such a well-organized and well-written piece; I expect to put it to good use in the months ahead. I'm also hoping (hint, hint) that there'll be a future book on Porsche transmissions that will include the Sporto.

Thanks,
Ed

Today's update: donuts

Those 165SR15 Michelins were dry rotting and I didn't feel like springing for Coker tire repops at $300 per. I'd also picked up a set of 15x7 Fuchs a short while back but they're in need of refinishing and I didn't want to wait until they were before mounting new rubber. So this morning I bought a set of 195/65-15 H-rated Bridgestone RE960AS.

I left the hubcaps off to polish them, but I'm starting to like this look so I may leave them off for the foreseeable future. If/when I ever do refinish the Fuchs they'll definitely get 205/60-15s, hopefully in something even stickier...

I also removed the Amco bumper overriders f/r because they were pitted and rusty and detracted from the overall appearance.

Ed
