82 SC and Warm up regulator?
I have an 82 SC and have a cold start problem. The car starts fine, but sputters for the first few seconds, leveling off at around 900 rpm at idle. The car needs to run for approximately 5 minutes before being driven. If not, it sputters and backfires, barely responding. After warming, it seems to run ok, although it seems be missing on occasion. Any ideas? Please let me know.

Hi and welcome.
Sorry noone has responded to your post. Most likely this is because this is a topic covered many times on this board. If you do a search regarding cold starting, you will find lots of info. Quite often this is caused by an old wornout warmup regulator (WUR) which can be made to be adjustable, or replaced. Other possible culprits include the cold start injector, auxiliary air valve, aux air regulator, air leaks, air/fuel mixture, and ignition issues. This does sound like a WUR problem. THe WUR lowers the fuel pressure when the engine is cold, this makes the CIS run richer since it's easier for the fuel metering piston to open more. As the engine warms up the fuel pressure goes up to normal operating pressure. The best thing to do is test it with CIS gauges (about $100 from Pelican or other sources). If you do replace it, buy a NEW one. Rebuilt ones usually aren't any better than the one they're replacing.

jg, as a new guy, i would suggest posting your location. let's say you were in the bay area. i could help.
like others have said. i bet your cold control pressure is high (car runs lean at startup, when you actually need it on the rich side). which is an easy free fix. a few simple taps on this plug located on the top of the WUR would bring it down. but you cannot do this without the CIS tester gauge. get the gauge, my favorite purchase, although i have only used it once, on my car.
