MSD rev limiter

I have a MSD 6AL (just like everyone else) and I can't find anything in the instructions on how to set the "soft-touch" rev limiter. I see where they talk about what a great thing it is, but nowhere about how to set it with the little pills.

Alzheimers is no doubt catching up with me, but I can't find it -- any help?

randy, your msd should have come with a bunch of different rpm chips. they just plug into the side. no magic. i have the 7k chip in mine.

Randy Webb 06-30-2004 08:43 PM

Uhhh... so it's so simple I don't understand it....?

They must go into the little socket on one side or other of the thing....

A Quiet Boom 06-30-2004 10:34 PM

yup, just plug in a pill corresponding to the rpm limit you want. I like to be about 200 rpm below what I consider a safe redline, that way I can hit the limiter without doing damage to the engine. A neat trick for an anti theft device is to use a two step limiter box and make a 2000rpm pill. It's been awhile but I believe the pills are 1K ohms per 1000 rpm. You can simply solder lugs onto a 1/4 watt resister and viola your own cheap pill without the cost of buying a 5 pack. Using the two step wire it's activation switch into a hidden place and switch it when leaving the car, assuming the theif gets it started he cant rev past what ever chip you put in. Works great as a valet switch as well. ;) MSD's lowest chip is 3000 and should have come with your box, they call it the test chip.

their website states you can adjust per 100rpm

how do you adjust the increments between the pills? which are all in multiples of 1000

J P Stein 07-01-2004 12:30 AM

The pills come in odd or even increments....200 rpm per step....7100-7300 or 7000-7200. A 5 pack is about 35 bucks at your local hot rod store.

Or a few bucks if you make your own pills! I'll dig around in my old racecar stuff and see if I can get some info on what you need. I even made my own adjustable limiters with a small enclosure, some bayonets and a mini potentiometer.

Why don't people use the Crane which adjusts infinately with a screwdriver?

A: not sure if crane rpm limiter operates the same way MSD does.

Below is adspeak from the MSD website.

"the Soft Touch circuitry begins dropping the spark to various cylinders. On the next cycle, these plugs are fired again to prevent fuel from loading up in the cylinder. The result is a smooth and accurate limiting action without backfires or roughness".

I thought this was all hype until the first time I hit the MSD rpm limiter on my 72S, I had never experienced such great limiting action. I would buy this Ignition just for the "soft touch" rpm limiter. My problem is with the way they price gouge by making you buy rpm pills. Although as A Quite Boom suggested, I suspect they are just different resistor values and with a bit of electrical knowledge you can rig an adjustable potentiometer and calbrate it for unlimited (pun not intended) adjustability.

Iīm very interested in this activation switch. Can anybody give me details on this?

Can I install an MSD and put this activation switch on my 95 993?

That would be of great use, specialy here in Brazil where they rob sports car to sell in Paraguay.

MMBRAZIL you don't want an MSD box in your car. I would only recomend them for a carbed car not a car with EFI. I would just install a kill switch, there are several ways to do this not sure what would be best for a 993. Basically you just want to put a hidden switch to your ignition or starter so the car can't be started when the circuit is incomplete.

MMBRAZIL 07-01-2004 11:08 AM

BD, doesnīt the factory anti theaft does that?

Buy the way is this factory system reliable?

B D 07-01-2004 11:13 AM

I have no clue on the 993, I am sorry to hear theft is a problem. I would consult a profesional about improving your alarm system.

I bet the factory alarm once set off would disarm the ignition but a pro would probably be stealing a car like yours and no his way around it. The coolest thing I have seen is a alarm that has a pager to alert you when the car is being tampered with, but is limited by a short range.

MMBRAZIL 07-01-2004 11:15 AM

Tks, anyway...

I have one. When necessary I'll only park where I'm sure it'll trigger the pager. It was about $125.

I think the best thing is to put a GPS tracer. Here they will aproach when you are at a stop light, with a hand gun, unfortunately.

do you recommend one ?

MMBRAZIL 07-01-2004 12:21 PM

Here in Brazil the best is Lo-Jack. 96% recovery. And most of the 4% Is owners disassembling there cars to sell the parts and then communicating it was robbed. Actualy Lo-Jack is not GPS its FM freequency.
My friend is a Lo-Jack chopper pilot, and he said itīs very reliable. They cover Brazil, part of Paraguay, Uruguay and Argentina.

thanks

you know that pager alarm thing would only really be effective if you were jet li, chuck norris, or some other badmothereffer. me, i would get beat up.
