Anyone ever snap a rocker shaft in 2 during regular driving?

This happened about 2 years ago...

I was driving along and all of a sudden lost compression in the motor. I was a block from my house so I drove the car back into the garage. Oil was leaking out of the left side of the engine.
I removed the valve cover and the rocker shaft and arm fell on to the ground. I looked at the other rocker shafts on the engine and realized that they were not aligned properly. I replaced the broken shaft and went through and re-aligned the shafts that were out of place. I would assume that when the engine was re-built before I owned the car someone made this error.

Do folks think that a valve hit the piston? I remember when this happened I was a bit greener than I am now and I called motor meister. They told me I had done massive damage and it needed to be addressed immediately to avoid even more damage. I was skeptical...

Anyone else ever break a rocker shaft?

The car runs fine.

rocker shafts may loosen when torqued to specs at re-build.
