Anyone ever..

Just curious if anyone has either done themselves or come across an early car that had been converted to the 72 style oil fill door? Would the change involve a new oil can?

thanks

James

I think with the set-up you refer to, you would need a new oil tank, because with the oil door the tank was in front of the rear wheel for more weight in front of the rear wheels. I believe it was only there for 1 year.

New oil tank, oil fill door, oil lines, and fittings for the oil filter. Lots of $$$$, which is probably why its not that popular a conversion. OTOH, if money is no object, you get some weight in front of the rear wheels and more room for the exhaust in case you want to build a twin turbo monster.

Methinks this is more for the 911R appearance than for improved weight distribution.

Sure would be cool, but I've never seen it either.

How about leaving the oil tank in place and relocating the fill port with a rubber tube of some sort. If just going for the look, seems like it would work, but then again what do I know.

I am also looking for oil tank relocation options to make space for future (potential) TT or exhaust routing.

What are the other design considerations if I am looking for another location (without cutting through the body, preferably)?

I am curious if the height of the bottom hose is important to maintain the correct flow of oil to the engine sump, and if there are special needs for the oil filter mount, since I was thinking of a remote filter option.

I know the oil system is "special", though, and want to make sure any new setup meets all the requirements of the old one in terms of filtering, pressure, gravity, copper lining?, etc.

Any advice on these considerations or others I have missed?

Other possible tank locations? Don't the later motors have them in front of where the engine oil cooler is?

Olivier

Anybody looking at this thread will probably want to look at a few others - I think they all say "oil tank" in the headers, and have been updated by someone posting on them in the last day or two.

The nice pics posted by Bill Verburg will be interesting to most. He also mentioned somebody who had done this - tho not with an external door.

The oil line and tank level are important, to the best of my knowledge. I think a custom tank in front the the wheel is the way to go using the '72 oil filter and t-stat console.

Milt,

Do you have pictures or descriptions of how the '72 oil filter works? I am having trouble visualizing it with the tank up there. I would definitely want the filler in the engine compartment.

Can the filter relocation kits you see for "regular" cars be used to relocate the filter on 911s, or are there special requirements there, too? The way the filter mounts directly to the tank does not look like it would be as straighforward, but it is hard to tell without knowing what the plumbing inside the tank looks like.

I've got pics and PET diagrams of the whole deal, as I'm currently doing this. My Tub is stripped for some mods anyway, so I'm mounting a NOS '72 fender and the factory tank + filer console on a '70 tub. Lot's of details; overall, it's easier to buy a one of the front tank rigs that goes in the smuggleers hole, if you're jus looking to move weight.
