carpet install question
I am putting a perlon felt carpet in my car and was wondering what everyone else used for adhesive? I have some 3M spray adhesive but I was unsure if this would work or not.
Thanks in advance Ryan

You'll probably need more than one can. I just put a kit in and I bought the other brand on the shelf which was Permatex "Body Shop Headliner and Carpet Adhesive." I liked it better. It tacked up sooner and repositioned fairly easy if I pulled it back right away and just touched up with some fresh spray. Believe me, that feature is handy.

I used brush on glue from 3M. I can't imagine spraying that stuff in a car with a dash, panels, a headliner and windows. The mist goes everywhere. When I use spray adhesive, I can feel it on my arms! And that's outside.
Milt, was your car complete when you did it?

I'm tackling my black carpet install in the 993 this weekend.. planning on using the 3M brush on glue. Are you guys just gluing the carpet down to the pan or are you installing a thin pad first?

Where did you guys get the 3M bush glue? My question is that the carpet is thinner than what I took out I don't want the glue to go through and leave a mess after it dries.
Motion--I am just planning on gluing my carpet to the pan, but my car is pretty sparse. Anything has to be an improvement over the tri-color faded mess that I pulled out the other day. I think the spray may be better for my application. I will let you all know what works out.

Motion - I just glued mine to the pan. I've read about some people using sound deadening material or paint. Not sure what the factory did in the 993.
Pookie - You may want to contact Bob at appbiz to find out what he recommends for Perlon carpet kit installs. |

I got it at Home Dump! You apply it to the pan (I scrubbed mine with a firm brissle brush to remove all of the old glue. It was like sand once it was broken loose from the pan. I then vacuumed it up and sprayed the pan black so when you lift up the "floor matt" portion of the carpet, it wasn't yellow! Hehehhe). Then I brushed the glue on to the pan and let it dry a while as suggested. So, by the time you put the carpet on, it won't soak through. If it does, you've either used too much, or not waited long enough. I used the Appbiz kit and noticed it's not two pieces on the tunnel, like the stock kit was. So, in an effort to make it easier to do tunnel work, I velcrode the tunnel piece down with the high strength velcro. I can pull it up at any time and have a bare tunnel, but you can't tell by looking at it.

I've never been able to get 3M spray to work as advertised. I'd try the other stuff listed next time. It's messy. Use good ventilation too.

I had the 3m stuff work perfectly (spray). With whatever glue you use, make sure you find out what the max temp it is rated for. It gets pretty hot inside of a car in the summer, and some glues can become loose in the heat. The local upholtery shop told me that, and I called 3m to make sure. They told me not to use the glue i had and to use another glue they made. (I think it was super 77 I was using and I switched to super 78) Anyway, worked well. Easy install. Spray on both surfaces, let dry, and stick.

What Chili said. While the spray works also, who wants that kind of mist floating around your car?
I believe if you search, Bob at Appbiz recommends the brush on stuff. I used the "gel" version of the 3M brush on in a 1 gal can.

Use Headliner and carper adhesive spray made by Permatex. The nozzle is adjustable and comes out in a flat spray that is stringy and there is no mist to float anywhere. You can control the spray very easily. The trick when spraying the inside of the car is start the spray in the middle and move to the edges where more control is critical, this way you know exactly how the spray is coming out. I hope that makes sense. I recarpeted my entire car and there is not one bit of overspray and you won't run the risk of oversaturating the carpet with glue.

Just pulled my carpet. What's the easiest way to get all the left over glue and insulation out?

Toolman, my kit came from World Upholstery and is Sliverknit, made in Germany
I removed my old carpet with a very sharp chisel and a sidewinder with a very stiff wire wheel. Whole thing takes a weekend if you work at an easy pace

Bob @ appbiz has a guy nearby that installs carpet. He uses bulk adhesive in a pressure pot spray gun. I sprayed alot of the carepet in the car using newspaper as a backup so my overspray didn't hit other interior. And the Permatex was a good find.
As mentioned, adhesive won't soak thru until you push it down and then you pushed it down too soon. |
