favourite tires for your 911?
I'm looking at new tires to go with early style 7" and 9" Fuchs.
The retailer suggests: 1. Continental ContiSportContact $560.00 2. Dunlop SP Sport 8000 $520.00 3. Michelin Pilot Sport $740.00 4. Yokohama A008P $810.00 5. Yokohama AVS ES-100 $420.00 What are your favourite tires, why and post some pictures. I want the right look as well as great performance for the street. Thanks Mike |

My 2 cents
I have the Yokohama AVS ES-100 on my 84, and I think they look a little big, they also bulge out from the rim. I prefer a tire that doesn't bulge out, but goes straight up?

I had Yoko's on a previous car and they were the best I've ever had. I currently have Toyo tires on my '84 with 205/55x16's on 7's on the front and just put 225/50x16's on 8's on the back. I had 245/45x16's on the back and like them better. I was told by my tire guy that the bulge, if it start at the rim, is called 'wheel saver sidewall'. They are designed to save your wheels if, heavan forbid, you scrape the curb.

I didn't see S03's in that list....
Load each tire into the forum search engine. I think you'll find that the ES-100's are the cost effective alternative to the king of the highway S03s, but are not good in "cold" weather -- and somebody was using cold to mean 60's in oF. Also, check out those new Goodyears. |

Bridgestone Potenza SO-3 Pole Position
Look at the data on tirerack.com --i.e. compare tread life, performance figures-- you'll see this tire is the best. Yeaah, good luck.

Hi there,
Here is one suggestion that's not on your list. I researched tires for a damn LONG time, and ended up getting Falken's, yes Falken's. I must say that I'm very pleased with them. I just did a DE with them, and they stuck way better than my Toyos. I got the FK-451's, which is a newer tire they have. Very good in wet too. I have 205/55's on the front and 245/45's on the rear (16" rims). Also, here is the best part, the rears were about 100 bucks each, and the fronts were $75 each, with free delivery. Could not beat that. They also have the small lip that protects against curb rash. Regards and have fun shopping. Here are some pix.

I've been running the Dunlop SP8000's for several years and like them alot. I can't speak to the other tires you listed, but I used to use Dunlop D40M2's until they stopped making them, and then switched to the SP8000's. The SP8000's are much better in the rain and have better grip than the D40M2's did. I've also noticed that they seem a little better the few times I've had to drive in snow with them. I just bought another set of the SP8000's for my '86 that will be going on a set of 7&8x16 Fuchs this week (can't wait!).

Seems like an odd list.
The Dunlop SP 8000 is an older tire. I think the current one is the SP 9000. I didn't like my SP 8000's much, although they were on the car when I got it and about 1/2 used up, so not a fair test. I've never heard much feedback, positive or otherwise, about Continentals. The Bridgestone SO-3 is much liked (do a search here) and it should have been mentioned too. I have those and am very pleased. Good rain performance was important to me.

Damn Victor. Those look familiar.
I was driving a potential buyer in around yesterday in my 86 with Falken GRBs back on it. We were slippin' and slidin' in the rain. I had to tell him it was about getting the enormous power of a 911 to the ground in the wet, not for the faint heatred. Ahem. The Falken Azenis is really pretty bloody good- highly recommended for the reason Victor menations. stuart 86 carrera

Folks:
For the record, my tyres look familiar to StuartJ for two reasons: 1./ He is used to seeing them infront of him at the track. 2./ His better half made him give me his old set because they wuz getting him too much attention from "da ladieez".

Hey all,
Haha, Yes Borla exhaust, it sounds incredible. Lucky for me that the PO had it installed. Hoosier, my rears have about 1000 miles on them now, so it's tough to tell. I figure they will last as long as S03's if not longer from what I've researched. I figure I can go through 2 sets of the falkens for the same price as one set of S03's. They are wearing very well so far, but only time will tell. My second choice were Bridgstone RE750's, which are a bit more, but I loved the look of the 451's. Vulcan tire has the best price I have found. Even though it's not free shipping, it's still cheaper than the overall price I ended up paying (with free shipping, prices were a bit higher). Here is the link: http://www.vulcantire.com (total of $366 shipped to NY). Regards and have fun. I give the 451's an "A", and they are pretty good in the rain too, which I need, especially if you get stuck doing a DE in not so great weather. I'd rather drive a few runs then get stuck in the pits. The best answer would be to have 2 sets of wheels, not just yet for me. Regards,
