sliiperySlope2: downside to pulling rear seats?

OK...so now the harness is attached to eyebolts on the rear driver's side seatbelt mount (but no seat belts back there), the harness bar is installed, and a Sparco Torino2 is coming for the passenger seat. I'm selling the stock seats, and will install mounts for harness on the passenger side.

So now I'm thinking, "gee, the rear seats are kinda useless." I think they've been used once in the two years of ownership, as my son rides with me up front (no airbag), and if the whole family goes anywhere we take a different car. So then the rear package shelf can go too, right? Then the setup is to put an appbiz (or equivalent) carpet kit in its place? (http://www.appbiz.com/product_info.php?cPath=42&products_id=52)

Any downside to this? I don't see the car going back stock any time soon. I'm thinking that if I wanted to carry stuff in the back I could pull the harness bar and make some sort of support that would mimic the function of the rear seats folded down.

You don't always need a flat shelf to stow stuff. No seats looks natural and works fine. The original rear shelf under the glass works w/o seats and makes a nice appearance, IMHO. But I'm biased as that is what I have.

Appbiz sells an RS conversion package that has only the wheel arch and seat bowl pieces plus the rear shelf. In cut loop only; tan and black.

Just in case you ever have the urge to PCA club race, you may want to hang onto those seats so you can run in one of the stock classes. Kinda silly, but you'd get smoked much more easily in a prepared class, and seats could be the one thing pushing you over the edge...

There's nothing wrong with removing them......as long as you have some idea of how you will be covering up the crappy looking carpeting and sound proofing. Once you rip this stuff out, your left with bare metal with lots of soundproofing stuck to where it was glued. Not a very pretty sight.

I've already put bigger sways on so I can't run POC "stock" class (not sure about PCA). I'll have to look and see if removing rear seats moves from improved to production...don't see why it would. I thought engine mods were the main consideration.

The PCA rules are vague at best, especially when it comes to what is allowed and isn't in the interior. It really doesn't matter unless your winning a bunch of races anyway.

For PCA stock, you can do revalved shocks, upgraded t-bars, upgraded sways, hard bushings and a few other items. Suspension mounting points can't be changed, so no coilover setups. Roll cages can't tie into suspension points., etc, etc, etc. 89 911 is right though, it is "gentleman" racing and nobody will say anything unless you beat the crud out of them. It's actually still fairly expensive to set up a "stock" car for PCA, but then nothing Porsche is cheap.

Go with the stuff from APPBIZ, however I think Wayne sells it here now. I have and it is great stuff, plus they were great to deal with.

Cheers, Jeff

Oh, like your gonna stop at just the front seats and harnesses?? Cmon, do it, the deleted package tray looks great. I do suggest that you make some sort of a tray, just some 1/8 masonite with some sound padding on the back and vinyl over it. Because the carpet in the rear window gets lots of sun it can start to discolor and turns a yucky yellowish color. But really, ditch the rear seats, it looks much cleaner. The last time I sat in the back of the porsche was when I was 10 but it was a cab so the top was always down.

Bob at AppBiz is a great guy to deal with. Stefan at GTS in Las Vegas sells a lightweight carpet kit also. Pelican retails both the AppBiz and the GTS products so you know its all good stuff.

Todd, if I had to do it again, I would have it professionally installed. I found the back around the seat paticularly troublesome.

Maybe after a few more track days. At this point I couldn't rationalize giving up the rear storage area for hauling stuff around. The harness bar is damn stout, and I can remove it if I want. I suppose the DAS bar can be removed too, but it seems like a lot more work.
