VDO tach vs OEM SC tach?
I was checking Ebay for an electronic tachometer to work with my SC conversion when I saw this:
PORSCHE 911 TACHOMETER VDO 78 - 83 I'm not sure if it's a standard VDO tach set up for the SC, or if it's an original SC tach modified in some other way by VDO. Is anyone familiar with this? The original tach in my '71 bounced around so much I never knew what speed the engine was turning when accellerating hard. I'm thinking it might be a good modern substitute instead of getting a junkyard tach. |

VDO was the manufacturer of OEM tachs for the 911SC.

That's right, VDO supplies the factory instruments to a large part of the german auto industry, including Porsche.
Very nice project by the way, I have followed your progress on your website. Personally I would try to find a pre '73 tach with the crome dial center to go with the 73 RS look. Here's one: Edit: Sorry, that's a mechanical tach, probably won't work on your car. Check this before you buy. The tach in the pic you posted looks like the one I have - from an '83 SC.

And it reads to 8K, not 7K, so you can't swap them as well. Consider having the old one rebuilt by North Hollywood speedo. Or by a $50 tach on eBay if you feel lucky. That's what I paid for one in good working condition. Watch out for (most) 914 tachs though, they won't work on a 6 cyl engine.

E-mailed NH Speedo. That would be really cool if they could rebuild the stock tach to work with the new engine.
