just turned 100 000! now what?

Hello,

my 1980 911 SC just turned 100 000 miles...
now, I know that passing this "landmark" mileage is not what will cause everything to go havock, but as I can already see the next 105000 service comming down the road, I am wondering what are the things that are likely to go bad in the near future and that I should take care of now instead of waiting for them to break on me (I already have the basic upgrades: chain tentioner and pop off valve)?
- fuel pump?
- starter engine?
- ????????

Good timing - 100K miles and you posted this at 9:11 AM EST

Hard to predict, but I wouldn't worry about it until "whatever it is" breaks

On a SC 100,000 is really not a landmark for any future problems. You have addressed two of the three potential problem areas on the SC engine. The third, broken headstuds, can only be observed once they break so no use worrying about something you can't do anything about. Sounds like you are doing ongoing maintenance, so I would just continue with how you are doing things now.

Good thread!

Sitting at 98K myself, this looks like it could be an interesting thread.

Have to agree with Project935, no sense in fixing something if it's not broken.

not trying to be agressive here but...

have you changed your chain tentioners? were they brocken when you changed them? :-)

ok, this is on the far side of high risk, low cost thing, but I just would hate to end up stranded on the side of the freeway in the middle of whyoming on day because I did not spend a couple of bucks at a convinient time to prevent it...

Go for the next 100,000! Chain tensioner= good comment. Andial used to tell me tensioners at 60,000 and top end rebuild at 120,000.

What do they know??

Hard to do religiously, but throw $XX each week/month into a rebuild account. You'll be glad you did when the time comes.

Wish I could do that with my projects ...

beeing stranded is the least of your worries if you have tensioner failure... funding a full engine rebuild and replacing the valves that shot through your valve covers would be though...

if you want to check the tensioners > listen to rattling in the chain housing when the engine is doing something like 2000 RPM ...
it should be quite audible ( haven't heard it , can somebody comment on this , how audible, loud is it ?)

Stop now and buy yourself another Porsche to help spread out the mileage and then when you cross 175,000 sell to a young kid whose dream car is a Porsche.

Uh, oh - 100,000 miles - that car is spent! I'll take it off your hands for $1500.

Well, you're getting pretty close to having it broken in, and I'm assuming the heater blower motor went after the first week. Wait till you get in the 300,000 range--actually, even then there's very little to worry about.

Oh yeah, I assume your car had the clutch done at some point. If not it's to be expected by now. Of course yuo'll have warning.

Drive... drive... then drive some more...

A couple of things worth doing... Turbo tie rods... your stock ones are probably getting soft, more from simple age than anything else.

For giggles, monitor your oil usage, get the motor ran through, leak down etc. for "security"... and drive.

Personally, on the top end thing at 120,000... whatever. If your not using oil now, you probably won't have an issue at all for another 100,000 miles if even then... Not worth cracking and engine for no reason. Tensioners... if you did the upgrade to the Carrera hydrolics... No worries. If stock SC do as already suggested... or just upgrade to Carreras and be done with it.

Drive... Did you get that? Drive!!!!

Actually, I do not know how long ago it went off, but it was not working....
however, I took the whole thing appart, cleaned it, placed a new connector (the old one was GONE), and now it works! as good as new :-) saved me $250....

that's easy , you'll hear/feel it slip when you pop in a gear, especially when the car is cold... : you will see the revvs go up without having the usual accelleration. as iff you have the pedal half depressed, even though your foot is off the pedal..
it gradually get's worse , but takes a relative long time before it's critical...

I've heard that if you can start off in 2nd gear easily, you are OK.

Pressure fed chain tensioners are NOT a wear item that needs to be changed. Unless there is noise you are fine. If you want to go 100% safe, you can limit the travel of the tensioner piston to completely avoid fatal collapse. Do the same than the old style collars on the non oil fed tensioners.

Cheers, George
