A few items of interest:
My buddies in VA tell me that IF you get caught, they do take the detector but once you pay the ticket they send it back to you.. So I'd take my chances.. Going through Canada is another story, you don't get it back. Those idiots up there ( the gov. guys not our beer drinking, P-car driving buddies) treat detectors like they treat handguns.. They will rip your car apart and you'll never see it again ( they won't pay for the damages either). |

I've always thought a nice stealthy install would be in a custom made sunvisor or a pod between the two center visor pins that would double as an interior light fixture. In both cases you would need to have a two piece unit and be able to mount the display somewhere useful and equally hidden [at least when its off]. I'm still living with my 80's era Passport and it has served me well.
|
I was considering doing a pod, but as it stands, I can't fold down the visors when the thing is installed. Used visors are too spendy to just cut up and experiment. :)

Nothing like Govt. oppression to make people become inventive, is there? A friend once told me he got a $900 check for a "piece of fiction" that he wrote. I asked where...he replied that he'd sent it to the IRS....;)

If you think speeding tickets are Govt. oppression, wait until you see what Bush has in store for us...

Where does the K40 remote go on a 911?
I had a K40 in the platic grill of my old car, where they recommend it, and it worked absolutely great. However, the front of the 911 is all steel, so where to put it? I was thinking on top of the front license plate frame, but the box is actually going to stick out a bit. Plus its a bit low down there.
I guess it can be mounted behind the mirror or something but I dont imagine that will be very pretty. My understanding is when its behind glass that does cut down on its detection capabilities quite a bit anyhow. Yearrrg. Not like I speed that much, but the darn thing is sitting my garage staring at me. Suggestions? |
Although for optimum performance the detector should be mounted high, I just use a small piece of velcro on the dash of all my vehicles. The V-1 works fine.
I have two strips of velcro on the detector. One that attaches to the dash strip and the opther is to attach a spacer to compensate for the taper of the dash so the detector is level. I leave the appropriate spacer in each vehicle. If I get pulled over, a quick yank and toss it under the seat in 2 seconds. Works great to prevent theft as well when the top is off and I pull over for a meal. Most cops know the tell tale sign of the suction cups on the glass. Most are not real sympathetic if they know you are using a detector and it's best to avoid that scenario if there is any hope for a warning....... I am in the mountains all the time. The HP sits right around a corner so they can nail you as you come around. The V-1 goes off easily before visual site can be made (before the turn). Rates as my best tool ever...... |
My K-40 was preinstalled by the previous owner so I cannot give 100% confirmation of the sensor location. I traced the wires to the front bumper (the wire runs up the passenger side of the front boot). The brain is mounted in the glove box ceiling. The red LED lights are mounted on either side of the Tac. There is an on/off switch to the left of the ignition.
I have a V-1 that is hardwired in my M3. It does use the suction cups and it is mounted just above the mirror and I have a remote display in the ash tray. With my tint strip, it is basically invisible from the front (and way too high up for "Barney" to see it when standing at my window. With the remote display, the V-1 looks off so it is not seen through the back window. My tint is 20% anyways so it would be hard to see the lights unless it was at night. I like the V-1 display etched in the mirror best (just pricey). People have found different ways to hide the main V-1 that are very stealth. Do a Google for V-1 or Valentine and you can find all sorts of hits. I just installed (Waiting to power up) the Blinder Laser Jammer in the M3. Very stealth. Dying to test it out as the V-1 tells you that you got hit byLaser but it is too late at that point. |
Love that V-1 Pod! I think I would relocate it so that if you did get pulled over it was not so visible. It looks fablous and OEM.

I love traveling home to Virginia - The first sign you see is "Welcome to Virginia", then "RADAR Detectors are Illegal", then "Speed Enforced by RADAR, VASCAR, and Aircraft". And, of course, the obligatory buckle up and speed fines doubled in construction areas signs. The troopers also are known to have Radar detector detectors. the max top speed limit is 65. Anything over 80 is reckless (class 1 misdemeanor and must appear in court no matter where you live) and over 100 assures you jail time. Rule: while in VA be cool oh and eventually they will get you for that lack of front plate. Glad I only visit.

Glad I do not live there!
Many moons ago I did get stopped in Virginia. The cop asked for my radar detector. He took it back to his cruiser and came back and handed me my ticket. I then asked him for my radar detector. He promptly went back and got it and gave it back to me. I was thinking afterwards that there was probably some rule that he could confiscate it if I did not request that it be returned. No idea if that is true, but I got the feeling if I had not asked for it, he was not giving it back. |

I have a 73 911 e and have yet to find a great spot for the detector. I have gotten pulled over more offten for the detector being seen then for speeding. The ticket is a major PIA because you can't just pay the ever increasing fine. You have to show up in court. They never took the dector.
You guys are all talking up the V! as the best. Do you know the ad that V1 runs all the time is based upon detector tests / comparisons in 2002. Since then I believe they have fallen behind in performance. They do have the arrows though. Chris 73 911 E |
You guys are very lucky to have the privilege to do that...better not to be caught with that in the car here...very lucky guys.

My Valentine 1 sees K band around corners and over slight hills perfectly. That is why so many people swear by them. Since you haven't used one then I would understand why you would not know this important piece of information. |
"around" means it easily detects the reflections off of trees, rocks, buildings, etc.
Radar is propagated in a straight line; it does not 'bend'. The V1 has not been appreciably exceeded inany meaningful performance characteristic yet. It is still the best overall by a long shot. |
Many of you guys wear baseball caps when you drive. Why dont you put the detector in the roof of the cap?
|
Why stop there? We could install one in our sagittal crests.
