CV Joint bolts from McMaster Carr?
Didn't someone recently post information about buying the CV Joint bolts from McMaster?
If anyone remembers the link or the part no from mcmaster, please let me know. Thanks, Brian Keith Smith briankeithsmith@ctc.net

Hi Brian,
How funny is that? This is my first time visiting the board in 5 days or so, and I see your post. I recently used MMCC, they are great. I had to buy the 45mm cv bolts to replace the factory axle. Are you looking for a set? I have a load of them. Here is the link: http://www.metricmcc.com Regards,

Standard "coarse" thread for a M8, I believe, is 1.25mm pitch.

I would order some serrated Schnorr washers along with the bolts.

I ordered the bolts from McMaster-Carr. They come with a blue oxide finish (don't think that affects the torque value) and are labeled "CAMCAR." Camcar is a fastener subsidiary of Textron Corp.
The quality (at least visually) was OK, the coating fairly consistent.

I believe Chris is correct as we just went through this on a friend's wide body...like the Turbo they use 10mm bolts.
Don't go by looks or finish....look at the top of the head indicating grade ( 10.9, 12.9, etc). Alternate sources include MSC and Graingers...as far as industrial supply houses go. ---Wil

If you will be referring to Wayne's 101 projects, the torque they suggest is wrong. For your bolts, I think the actual number should be 60 or 61 ft. lbs. for the 10mm. The numbers he uses are reversed.
Ask me how I know. Hey Wayne, can I get a credit when the second edition comes out? I snapped a bolt due to attempting to torque the 8mm bolt at 60 lbs.!! I think the error has already been reported to you. A credit would be very prestigious for me...haha. regards,

Correct..the nominal 60 ft-lbs is for the larger 10mm bolts. I think the 8's use 30-35 ft-lbs, if I recall correctly.

Mc Master-Carr and this place:http://www.metricmcc.com/ are two different places. I do know that everything(tons) that I have bought from McMaster-Carr is is first class.

What is the advantage of getting them from MCC or McMaster-Carr as opposed to the dealer? Are they really so expensive there that it pays to mail order them?

At MMCC, my box of 50 bolts (8mm x 45mm length) was $14.00. I thought that was a deal. I picked the box up, but they had it shipped to them overnight from one of their other warehouses, and did NOT charge me extra. I thought that was great of them, and will go back again and again.
Regards,

I got the hex heads from the dealer. I used the 50% off coupon, but it appears Dr. Wienie King has put a stop to that in favor of keeping the yuppiie's purchases pure.

the gaskets are a pia when using 30lbft. I left them out 2mo ago and used some realy sticky axle grease on the mating. I want to drive on the beach at low tide to test my latest bright idea.

I used McMaster Carr bolts when I repacked this winter. I've had 6 track days this year and I checked torque before each event. Zero problems or issues. Way cheaper then factory and easier for me to get.
