1987 911 Always blows hot air in cabin
I recently bought a 87 911 Targa and no matter where I put the ventilation controls it blows hot air all the time. I can't drive without the windows open or the top off because it gets so hot in the car. There wasn't an owners manual so I'm not sure if theres a problem or operator error. Any Also where would I get an owners manual?

First off, the search button is your friend. Learn to use it. Now assuming your controls work, look between the seats you will find one of these configurations: one or two red levers and/or a console with a knob on top. If you have levers, push them down to cut off heat to the cabin. If you have the knob. Turn it to zero. If neither of those work, jack up the rear of the car, place it on jackstands and check to see if the flapper boxes open and close.

The ventilation system is for fresh air only, so it will at best blow air at the existing ambient temp. Only air conditioning will give you cooled air.
If the heater flappers are working correctly, per KurtV's test, then that's as cool as it will be without AC. Welcome and good luck. Paul

If you have auto climate control, the linkage from the servo can pop off. With auto climate you won't have two red control levers between the seats.

I must have the auto flapper control because I do not any red manual levers between the seats. Is there anything special to finding and fixing the flappers?

You can buy an owners manual, a very good quality reprint from Pelican here http://www.pelicanparts.com/catalog/shopcart/911M/POR_911M_documt_pg2.htm

Flappers open and close just fine. I found them just inside the rear wheel wells, they were open and a little rusty, I lubed them up and confirmed they open and close like champs when I adjust the dial.
No matter where the flappers are the temperature of the air coming out of the vents is hot as Haitii. Any other ideas? I sure hope this isn't as good as it gets?

A search turn up this thread among others: Auto heat troubleshooting
Try a search using "heat servo" or "auto heat" as the search string. -Chris

the air is controlled using the flapper box and fans - one in the engine compartment and one in each footwell.
so i guess if the flapper box is working it may be the fans? are they on all the time? does the flapper box shut off the air (i can't remember)? seems the obvious place.

When I turn the heater control into the red the flappers close?
(They no longer take in fresh air) Is this correct? A fan in the engine compartment and a fan under the dash comes on and the heat is rolling in. When I turn down the heater control the flappers slowly close and the fans turn off. Everything appears to be working besides it always heating.

I will bet you the flapper is open a hair. Mine moved 1/16 when I was convincing it..... and it made all the difference!

I don't have the automatic system in my car, but I've noticed that the Bentley manual has some adjustment procedures for setting the controls.

the air must still be getting past the flapper boxes.

As rich says, air must be still getting by. Although the boxes appear open, there is actually a 'flap' inside the box that must close to stop the flow of hot air. Perhaps these are not sealing. Once the vents on the flappers are open, gently turn them a little further by hand and see if that helps. A slight adjustment might be needed to get them to go further and seal.
