Project 73 911 R/RS -- Week 13

Not a super-productive week... new company is set to launch its first products this week, so that's been taking up a lot of time... but the motor is in. Pelican starter should be in this week, oil thermostat piston and halfshafts rebuilt, and then it gets fired up, and then...

This was the easiest motor/trans install (3rd) I've done. 20 minutes after getting it on the plywood it was bolted up. An hour after that, it was pretty much connected up.

Jack the car way up. I play with it an inch off the tires to see what it can do and then test going up. This thing was rock solid.

Line the motor up. I've got it on a 2' x 2' 3/4" piece of plywood... balanced, but weighted toward the back.

Slowly jack it up and ease it in. Make sure the jack can roll around easily to make minor adjustments. Be careful getting the trans shift rod in the tunnel.

I put in new cabriolet motor mounts and attached the motor first, but loose, then used another jack to get the trans mounts lined up and bolts in. All 4 bolts are threaded by hand.

What's the best way to see what wires go where? Take a few steps and see. The hour to get things hooked up doesn't take into account that I need to fabricate a U hanger for the fuel filter and drill a few holes for the coil. I also need to look at the incoming fuel line to the fuel filter too. When I called BAT for the AN6 to 14MM conversion, they gave me a female 90 degree elbow. It should be a male. With a brass conversion male conversion piece in place, it works, but I'm not keen on the connection between the new male and the elbow... it only threads in 3-4 threads deep and I just don't feel like there is proper seating between the two. This can only mean making a new AN6 male elbow while the engine is in.

The motor in the car. Once the coil and fuel filter are in place, I can focus on tidying up the wires.

Anyone know when I can get a heat block-off plate?

I noticed you don't have the rubber skirt that runs around the engine bay and seals against the engine tin, does this cause you any problems?

Nice work by the way.

PS a fellow by the name of Roger Sheridan on the board makes a really nice glass block off plate (I paid $37 on eBay for one)

Thanks John and Steve, I just ordered one from Roger. Good guy.

regarding the engine tin and rubber skirt, I've seen a few track cars with no tin or skirt at all, so we'll see.

Hey Chris,

I've seen that board! I'm sure it's still at Jame's house.

I moved the car out in June. It's pretty much at a standstill while the new company gets up and running.

Why the pointed ends?

It gets the board closer to the firewall yet clears the oil lines (and AC lines for cars that have them).
Your car is an inspiration for us all.

I also noticed you do not have the black plastic heat ducting on the left side of engine bay. Looks like it is in place on the Red Targa. Does the heat work without it?

Chris, here are weeks 1 - 13. William, I start work on this again in January. I just picked up a 993 TT front brake set-up, so the Turbo set-up will be on the block soon, also found some Fikse's at a good price.

On the to-do list:
All new brake lines, MC install, front brakes/discs
Wire-up the Motronic, kill switch and brake lights
Install new piston in oil thermostat
Install doors and fabricate a custom lightweight latch mechanism
Install all Lexan (homemade) and maybe make a Lexan windshield
Decide on a tail and go to paint.

We sell the block off plate - do a search, and it should come up...
