Cutting pre 74 headers
I recently purchased a cheap pair of headers off of ebay hoping to use them to backdate my exhaust. Since I’m not running any heat or A/C I cut all the tin of off them and the internal pipes were in great shape. Unfortunately the outer exposed pipes from the collector to the muffler flange are in bad shape. I was wondering if anyone here has ever cut this section off and moved the flange back closer to the merge collector and then used the common extensions to connect to the muffler. The extensions are the type that racers use to swap out from mufflers to use megaphones.

This image might help to explain what Im thinking of. Does anyone know the part # or have measurements of the header extensions that go between the headers and muffler?

Hopefully I'd be able to modify my headers to use this type of extension.
Has anyone else ever done this before? ![]() Last edited by smestas; 07-12-2004 at 04:08 PM.. |

I believe Pelican sells a replacement section, which is used on the pre-74 HE's...IIRC, only one end has a flange..

If megaphones are used, seems like you have more leeway with the eventual end point. In this case, a muffler shop should be able to weld a flange onto the header collector, then fabricate an extension piece for each megaphone.

I was thinking of cutting them and modifying them to mate up to a dual in dual out flowmaster.

"
