~70 911 wiring question

Hello all, i've embarked on one hard ass project, but i feel it will be worth it in the end. I've taken the beautiful 911 dash and wiring from a wrecked 70 911 chassis and mounted it into my replica 9146gt. The only problem i have left is how the windsheild wiper motor and the two interminent relays get hooked up. There is no factory diagram that i have been able to find that shows the interminent relays, and Porsche changed the wiring on the 911's mid years during 70-73. This makes the factory diagrams more of a guildline. If anyone is on a restoration, or is feeling energenic, i'd like to know what color wire goes to what pin # on the motor itself and the interminent relay pin #'s too.

To prove i am serious and it is worth your time to help me, here is my almost complete diagram of the 70 911 wiring harness spliced into the 914 wiring harness. Thanks in advance, Don.

That's going to be nice.

I've got a separate Porsche wiring diagram for the intermittant wipers for the 911 at home. It was released as a supplement I think, and I think the earliest one is late 70s... But I can shoot a picture of it if you think it might help.

BigD,
Cool project - even the ignition switch. I’m impressed.

Some basics that I’m sure you know:
Make yourself a perfectly accurate, like factory, wiring diagram in digital form. You (and future generations) will appreciate the effort. Besides, a big print will make a great wall hanging.

Once you have all the wiring done, go back and make the harness look as if were factory. With heat shrink and appropriate tape someone could be hard pressed to tell it isn’t. You want to be able to show off this considerable effort.

I’ll go search. I’m sure I have a ’72 911 wiring diagram and may have a ’73. Send me your e-mail address and I can send you high res copies.

Best,
Grady

Grady, if you have a '72 wiring diagram, I would be very appreciative if I could have a copy. My wiring is in very poor condition with cut wires everywhere.

Bill,
Send me your e-mail address. The files are too big to go through Wayne's system. I'll send them as several Meg+ files and you can paste them together.

Best,
Grady

Bill,

This may or may not be of any value to your situation, but there are links to electrical diagrams sl35 and sl33 in the thread below.

Good luck in your project.

Thanks. I have seen those, but I haven't seen any specific to '72. If they exist, I definitely want to get my hands on them.

Derek, you fregen rock! thank you sooo much. Now i can install the wiper motor and move onto the fresh air box. Again, thank you very much.

Grady, thanks for the kind words... i'm well on my way to making a good diagram... the wiring diagram i posted originally i made on my computer. Every single wire has been gone over, any wire that had corrosion was cut back to clean copper and replaced with the same color coded wire. Fallowed up with Wurth shrink wrap (about $200 in shrink wrap and new connectors).

Thanks all, Don.

What software did you use to make the diagram?

Don't laugh... microsoft paint. Its so easy to use, the pixel size on full zoom is big, it makes it nice to work with. The only gripe i have is you can't zoom out enough to see everything, but i'm going to take it to kinkos and print the whole thing.

Hey Bill, does the '72 have a level sensor in the tank? I don't think it would matter because the wiring is already on that side of the car for the oil tank level sensor behind the wheel... so they would just add some lenght to it. I think that would be the only difference electrically to your car over the '71 and '73 911's.

BigD,

No, the wiring is different among '70, '71, '72, and '73. You would think it should be the same. It is very different in '69 and again very different '68 and earlier. In '74 everything changed dramatically.

Send me your e-mail address and I'll send you the '72.

What engine, other. I want to see this someday.

Best,
Grady

Grady, I've seen the factory '70-'74 diagrams hoping to find the wiper relays, and did notice some changes, but nothing huge (the manual i had also did not have any updates either). Only adding wires where new options and upgrades. I figured the same in '74 they got there act in gear and made it the more consistent from then on.

The car will be getting a 3.2 carrera, keeping the stock 901 trans, Quaife limited slip, trans oil cooler, Bilstein RSR fronts, coil over bilstein rears, boxster mono blocks all around, Fikse FM10 8 and 9.5, i did all the body work, bare metal restoration, fiberglass flares and shot the paint job myself, Guards Red. My own 8pt chromoly cage, Bent and Tig welded my self, and my reproduction aluminum oil tank.

Every thing else am going to make: relpica aluminum Recaro GT3 seats with that imitation italian suade (like the Audi S4 has), carpeting, dash pad, custom aluminum air damns front and back, aluminum rockers, aluminum door panels, a buddy of mine is making carbon fibre panels for me to lay over them, carbon fibre inserts for the dash molding, doors will be like a 911 RSR with the lock button next to the triangle window and the open handle being a strap to pull.

The only thing i'm going to farm out will be the gauges to North Hollywood Speedo. I have an original RS/RSR 180mph mechanical speedo that needs cleaning on the glass, the left combo gauge is going to be oil level/ oil temp (temp in the tank), the right combo gauge (where the clock goes) will be fuel level/volt metre. Plus, the tack will need to be upgraded to accept the motronic 3.2 input.

This is how i think the 914, excluding the 916, should have been. Just one guys vision.

Shoot me an email anytime, Bigd9146gt@yahoo.com

Thanks, Don.
