FRont Fender to Cowl Seal. 6.5mm or 4.5 mm

I just got the FRont Fender to Cowl Seal for my 83sc . Pelican told me i needed the 6.5mm width but the one on the car seems to be a bit smaller (maybe 4.5mm?)

can anyone confirm which size i need? thanks

I had the same problem on my '83 SC. I looked at the stuff I got (I think it was Automotion at the time) and knew it was too wide. I ended up going with the smaller seal, which I also ordered despite their recommendation because the 6.5 mm just seemed too big. --DDD

How do you put those cowls in? Do you need to take off the fender?

Thanks,

David

The 6.5mm is/was for the Turbo, the 4.5mm for NA cars. The piece that sits down between the fender and the body is the same width, so its a matter of personal taste. I think I used the 6.5 on my Targa and it looks fine. The old seals were pitted and hard, so anything was an improvement.

You didn't ask, but....

After you loosen the bolts in the trunk, you'll also need to loosen (NOT REMOVE) the allen headed bolts that are tucked inside the fender by the A pillar - you get at them by opening the door and reaching in. If you don't already have them, get yourself a ball-headed 5 or 5.5mm allen wrench so you don't strip the head (I can't remember which size the bolt is).

Once you remove the old seals, try and get the gunk out that has accumulated in the gap - you'll be amazed at how much crap is in there. I sprayed it with WD40 to loosen it up and gently went at it with a thin screwdriver.

Be sure too, to lube the new seal do it will slide down between the fender and the trunk.
