				Help! Failed Smog CO test.

I recently moved to Las Vegas, and I have to have a smog test, even to put classic car plates on the 912E.

I passed everything but the idle CO test, getting a 3.44 against the 2.50 limit. The tech said it was idling too rich. Anyway I can lower the idle CO? I can get a waiver after spending $450 in repairs at an approved shop, but I would rather spend the money on other parts. Thanks a million, Jerry Phillips |

I asked this question just a couple of days ago. There are some helpful answers here , although the most helpful info was in our host's 101 Projects book.

If it matters, I just realized that the gas here in Las Vegas is oxygenated. The gas in the tank is from St Louis. Any impact on CO readings?

jerry, just take it to a reputable shop and have them lean it out just for the test. then take it back to him to richen it right back up. my bay area guy will do that for free,, just to fight "the man". if he does charge, last time i checked my guy charged me $30. have some beer ready? reference the beer thread so you dont take any crap, and offend the guy

That's the easiest solution which is done via an air flow meter adjustment, since your 912 is an "E" with L-Jetronic fuel injection.

I will make the appointment tomorrow. Time to introduce the car to the POC guy here in Vegas anyway. Thanks everyone for all the help.

You can buy an exhaust gas analyzer for a buck and a half and lean it our yourself. You will learn something and add an important diagnostic tool to your inventory.

and this buck and a half analyzer is on which aisle at Pep Boys? Maybe this, along with the MBI book on Bosch fuel injection systems I found at Barnes & Nobel might do it.
