Any experiences with "911 Design" in Montclair, CA? Good PPI shop?
Hi all,
Well, I've decided that my '71 911E Targa just won't cut it for a daily driver in the searing SoCal heat. It's a blast to drive, and I love the sound of the webers at full throttle. But arriving to work with a wet dress shirt is no fun. And I've always preferred coupes to Targas. In any case I've found a fabulous one owner '86 Carerra coupe with only 88,000 miles on it for a good price. I have agreed to purchase it subject to PPI. He has all the service records from new (and the window sticker!), and it has been serviced for years at 911 Design in Montclair, CA (he loves this shop). It is convenient for both of us to meet there to do the PPI and hopefully subsequent purchase. Would you trust this shop to give a fair PPI? I may service the car there myself also, so hopefully they wouldn't be too biased in the seller's favor. Most good shops would be honest with the PPI, no? I will probably put my 911E up for sale soon after this deal is accomplished, so be on the lookout...I'll list it here first before putting in in the AutoTrader or Ebay (last resort). Thanks for any advice! Last edited by jkarolyi; 07-18-2004 at 12:37 PM.. |

I believe 911 Design is Loren Beggs' shop. He's a very good POC club racer. 911 Design has prepped a lot of 'Tribute to Le Mans' enduro winners in the past few years.

Yeah, Loren Beggs it the guy that the seller says to talk to. He says he preps a lot of race cars. Anybody have good or bad experiences with them or know people who have?

FWIW, he has a very strong rep as an independant Porsche shop, (lots of race cars, but stock ones as well), they definitely know a pickle from a cucumber over there. I would not hesitate for a moment to buy a car that his shop has serviced. (Assuming that the owner really kept up w/ everything).
You may want to get the car PPI'd by another indy shop w/ a strong rep, such as NARW or TRE Motorsports, just to avoid awkwardness/conflict of loyalty on the part of 911 Design. Another thing, if the owner always brought it to 911 Design, he definitely wasn't the cheapskate type, if you get my drift.

IMO it's a conflict of interest for this shop to do the PPI.
You know, you may still arrive for work with a wet shirt driving that '86 coupe in Riverside. Take it from me (black/black '88 coupe in San Fernando Valley) the A/C is mediocre at best.

Yeah, this guy is certainly not lacking in funds...he has at least a 2 million dollar house in Upland. Always nice to buy a car from someone who has the bucks to maintain these cars properly. >IMO it's a conflict of interest for this shop to do the PPI. Yeah, that's what I thought too, but I thought maybe an honest shop could give me an unbiased assessment. I hate to have the seller drive all the way to Riverside to my shop. I suppose that's what I'll have to do. |
