Power window woes
I have an 84 Carrera and a few days ago I went to drive it to work and noticed the passenger window will not go up. It has no problem rolling down, but will not go up. Both driver and passenger switches would not make it go up, so I do not think the switch(es) are defective. I tried to remove the motor (was going to test motor under load in both directions), easier said than done. The mechanism looks good, no signs of binding.
The Bently shop manual does not show how to remove the internal parts of the power window mechanism. At this point the motor is still inside the door, the door panel is off, and aside from cutting some access holes to get to the internal parts, I am at a loss. Any advice? |

1. Buy a new switch.
test.... no worky? 2. pull the motor and have an electric shop test, and repair as necessary. 3. post your results

I had the same exact problem - switch was bad. Try swapping with the good one and see if it works.

I've had this problem too. I bought 3 used switches from someone off the 911 Used Parts Board and problem solved. Several people have mentioned that the new replacement switches don't seem to hold up as well as the original ones.

I would still suggest trying a replacement switch on the drivers side before pulling the motor. Mine started to act up over a period of time and I would have to flick it several times before it would put the window up. When the internal hinge finally broke, the symptoms were just what you described. Not sure why but there it is. The motor is mount by a couple of bolts and has to be maneuver cafefully to get it out the access hole. Previous contorsionist experience is helpful.

Crash 94536,
How did you determine that both of the switches are good?

If your window goes down, but not up (and it's not a mechanical binding issue) then your problem is in your switches and associated wiring. Make sure both the driver's side and the passenger side are OK. The wiring for the passenger side window goes through both! If one switch is bad, most times neither side will work.

Have you tried connecting the wires at the motor backwards, it should then make the window go up but not down. If it does work that way, you either have a bad switch, or wiring from the switches. Try reversing polarity, and see if it works.

Thanks for the diagram...the problem isn't that the windows don't work, it's that the wires are different colors on both doors and i can't recall the order that they all plug into the switch.

I had a similar problem but there is a thread that tells the wire colors with a text diagram. The description was upside down compared to the way my switches are installed but I'm sure you can figure it out just as I did. Do a search for power window switch threads until you find it. If you still can't find it, send me a PM with a fax number and I'll draw you a diagram of how mine are wired and send it tomorrow.

Christiaan,
Have some spare fuses ready. Most likly you will blow a few when you try some combinations until you get it right. You won't hurt anything, the fuses will protect the circuit, but you could go through a few.
