I'm right there with ya -- I'm working on a tranny rebuild right now. Haven't even opened up the tranny, purchased any tranny specific tools, or purchased any parts specifically related to the tranny, and I'm already in for nearly $300 on random worn out parts -- rusty nuts, stripped out bolts, gaskets bits, CV boots, hoses, etc. It really adds up in a hurry, doesn't it?

The original switches seem to work really well. Maybe you could try getting some switches from a salvage/junk yard. Assuming they are original they may last a long time.

Yep, my miata is a fun little car, but it's nothing compared to my ex-911.

Sonic,

I posed a query about three weeks ago on the subject of any interest in a 'relay upgrade kit' for the window circuit ... and the lack of reponse was deafening!

While I assumed that most readers here would be able to draw the parallel between headlamp relay upgrase kits and window kits ... apparently I was mistaken!

There are very good reasons why the switches don't last very long ... just as with the factory dimmer switch!

The circuit would not be particulary complicated, but a new, fused power lead would need to be run into each door, and at least two relays would be needed in each door, too!

Electric window down, dead, now back to life

Warren, your idea was clearly before it's time. One month ago, the community simply wasn't ready for such a radical departure from what we know as sanity.

I got 3 used switches from someone on the 911 Used Parts board who was parting out a car. Definately the way to go. Older switches last, new switches are crap.

Sonicdb,

I am sure there was a thread not too long ago in which someone showed how they inserted a small metal part (paperclip?) into the part of the switch that kept breaking.

Also, are you sure your window is not binding, or rocking during use?
Have you lubed and/or replaced the felts?

have a spare helper spring if you want it. I replaced mine for some worthless reason. The old one was fine. Let me know and I'll send it right off.

I, on the other hand have just gotten back from vacation to a dead battery even though I turned off the alarm. Hmmmm . . . Haven't started the car for almost a month.

I'll pass on a recent comment from one of my customers:
(went something like this...)

Yeah, she's getting on in years, certain things are a little slower moving now, some things are a little more used than others, other things are a bit faded, but she's comfortable and I 'm used to her. And my wife keeps reminding me that this car is just like her, trade heror the car in on a newer model and the break in and upkeep will empty my pocketbook. So I keep my SC and my wife and just ogle those water cooled and water filled models.

We all got a good chuckle out of this old guy.

Been there! I started my tranny rebuild with the intention of spending as little as possible and just fixing the 1st and 2nd syncros. Came out of if with a $1250 tab, new alternator, new clutch, countless new gaskest and seals, several new bushings and bearings, and many more things I had no intention of touching. On the positive side, it drives like new now!

Todd thanks for the offer, I just purchased a new helper spring from Pelican though and am going to put that on this weekend.

Paul, good tips on checking out the smoothness of the windows. They seem to work fine with no binding.

I think the new switches are just POS... Im going to have to try and rebuild them.

BTW... I left one item off my original list: one of the screws holding the passenger side sun visor fell off last week. lol

Hello Bob.

For a mileage example...It is the end of Tuesday, and Ive already done 487 in the first two days. Typical week is 7-800 miles.

!

Im thinking strongly about getting a second Porsche, but am unsure of which one to get:

Another Carrera Cab
930 Cab
993 Cab
or put a deposit down on a new 997 Cab.

Money really isnt an issue, but Value is. I want a car that looks great and kicks ass. There are pluses and minus for all of these cars... so Im not sure.
